Melanoma & Skin Cancer Awareness

Skin Cancer

Basal Cell, Squamous Cell & Melanoma

are the most common skin cancer types.

Most of these three types of skin cancer are caused by "sun" exposure to ultraviolet rays (UVA/UVB).

PSST: Helpful hint - wear sunscreen!!

(this means daily)

The American Cancer Society reported that nearly 100,000 Americans were diagnosed with Melanoma in 2023!

Fact: 97,610 estimated new cases of invasive melanoma were diagnosed:

58,120 men

39,490 women

Unfortunately, 2023 statistics reported 7,990 melanoma deaths.

5,420 men

2,570 women

Melanoma is more common in men overall, BUT before the age of 50 rates are higher in women than men.

The number of ALL skin cancer cases is on the rise ~ increasing in number each year!

Most skin cancers are caused by exposure to ultraviolet (UVA/UVB) radiation primarily from the sun.

Did you know that only a little over half of American adults use daily sun-protection measures?!?!

Wearing SUNSCREEN even on cloudy days could save your life!

The good news is that if diagnosed and treated early, skin cancer can often be cured.

If you think something looks suspicious ~ PLEASE don't delay ~ see your dermatologist right away!

Sun Protection Factor

SPF is the Sun Protection Factor

a "measure of the level of protection" offered to the skin from UVB rays, the 'burning rays' that cause sunburns,

skin damage & can contribute to skin cancer.

If your skin would normally burn after 10 minutes being in the sun, applying an SPF 15 sunscreen would allow you to stay in the sun without burning for approximately

150 minutes (a factor of 15 times longer).

This is just a rough estimate considering; skin type,

time of day, the intensity of the sun,

the amount of sunscreen applied

the type of sunscreen (chemical-vs-physical) used.

Understanding the truth about sunscreen can help people use it correctly.

Here are a few facts for you to know:

1. Sunscreen is always necessary, even on cloudy days, during winters, when the sun does not feel as strong as usual.

2. People of all skin types and complexions need sunscreen. Everyone is at risk of sunburn and skin damage!

3. It is still possible to get a tan wearing sunscreen as it is the body’s natural protective response to UV exposure.

4. Sunscreen will not last all day after just one application. In reality, sunscreen breaks down in the light & loses effectivity over a short period of time & to remain effective should be re-applied at least every 2-4 hours!

5. The higher the number doesn’t mean the better. Sunscreens with really high SPFs do not offer significantly greater protection than SPF 30. Fact = SPF 30 filters out 96.7% of UV rays, while SPF 60 filters 98.3% of UV rays. So despite doubling SPF, UV protection is only increased marginally.

6. Beware - Sunscreens are not 100% waterproof.

7. All sunscreens are not the same. There are 2 main types:

Physical which allows for “deflection” of the UV rays using active ingredients such as titanium dioxide & zinc oxide.

Chemical which uses “chemical blockers” to absorb UV rays with ingredients such as avobenzone & oxybenzones.

Using sunscreen is essential & it reduces the negative side effects of harmful UVA and UVB radiation from the sun!

Adults of all ages & skin colors should use at least an SPF of 30 during all indoor and outdoor activities.

You should also wear protective clothing & shades when outdoors to protect yourself from the sun.

Sunscreens come lots of different forms; creams, lotions, gels, sprays, sticks & powder.

It is ultimately your choice & what you find comfortable to use.

Remember that the key is to apply sunscreen liberally and evenly.

Never use sunscreen after it has expired.

Always reapply sunscreens when you are outdoors for a prolonged time.

Embrace your unique skin ~ it's the only skin you'll ever have.

Wear it with pride ~ protect it & remember sunscreen is always in!
