State of the Youth Sector Forum 2021

The State of the Youth Sector Forum is YACWA's annual gathering of over 70 frontline youth workers, service managers, young people, executives and government. With a focus on networking, problem-solving and future-proofing in our youth sector, this Forum is the yearly temperature check where we explore the strengths, challenges and innovations happening in our sector, and work together to map out our priorities to create an equitable future for young people and the industry that supports them. This year, YACWA is breaking down silos of service delivery, identifying the gaps workers are seeing on the ground, and working out what Western Australia needs to improve the wellbeing, opportunities and security of our state's most vulnerable young people. YACWA is also excited to announce that it will be joined at the Forum by a number of State Members of Parliament to join in on discussions towards the latter part of the day as a crucial part of efforts to implement collective solutions enhancing youth service delivery in Western Australia.

Get Out & Vote: Be a Vocal Local
Did you know that young people aged 18 to 25 are least likely to vote in Local Government elections? Yet, the decisions made at this level have significant impact on our day to day lives from our local libraries, pools, sport and rec centres, skate parks, BMX tracks, youth centres, parks, recycling and waste management, environmental conservation and more! Don't know what the candidate represents? Then check out what they stand for on your local government website, or give them a call and have a chat? Ask them about the issues that matter to you. Voting is easy! If you are enrolled to vote, you will get a ballot in the mail. Fill it out and return it before the closing date! Or you can vote in person on Saturday 16th of October. If you are a local government, YACWA have created tiles you can use on social media – please contact lianda@yacwa.org.au for copies of these. If you are a member of YACWA, we will even put your logo on it for you to use! Please share this widely! Let’s get the Youth Vote out at these elections and get youth issues on the agenda of local government!

New training: Involving young people in community groups and committees
YACWA has developed a new training, ideal for local government authorities who want to support their community groups and resident organisations to recruit and support younger members. This 2 1/2 hour workshop covers the benefits and challenges of involving young people, what motivates them to get involved, how to develop a youth-friendly culture, how to reach out to young people and what practical things you need to consider to support meaningful youth participation. This workshop is co-facilitated with young people and includes a youth panel and case studies. One local government said: "We’ve been raving about what a fabulous session it was. It was great to have some really original content, beautifully crafted and presented. I have actually attended a few community meetings and heard people speak of some of the learnings from that night". For more information, or to get a quote contact Lianda on 9227 5440 or lianda@yacwa.org.au.
