2023. ARE YOU READY?

“Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?”

― Mary Oliver

As we shift our attention towards contemplation of the year ahead, the focus continues to be on manifesting (or maintaining) health, harmony, and happiness. We're looking for a good balance between staying 'in the present', while simultaneously planning for the future (without getting too far ahead of ourselves).

Studies have already shown that as we get older, having a sense of purpose is important for maintaining emotional well-being. So planning for the future has merrit. You might even say 'it's vital'.

As for staying 'present', it's a known fact that those who take time to notice more of the small things, and enjoy the simple pleasures of life, are happier and often more productive.

Being present doesn't prevent you from thinking about, and planning, for the future. Much of the confusion about 'looking ahead' lies in the fact that when we plan for the future, we often begin to tell ourselves stories about all the things that could go wrong. The '"may-be, perhaps, possibly" fear-inducing scenarios that we conjure up. It's this negative self-talk that stops us from being 'present'.

What keeps me present?

I start each day with a disciplined approach

  1. As I stretch my arms and brush sleep from my eyes, I begin offering gratitude. No matter what else happens throughout the day, my life continues to feel full of blessings from this one simple practice.

  2. A strong cup of coffee in bed. Purely an enjoyable ritual.

  3. 20-40min meditation. This is grounding and centering, and due to its regular practice, my intuition is heightened, allowing me to be guided by my higher self with every decision I make throughout the day.

  4. Healthy breakfast. Fuel. Fuel. Fuel.

  5. Exercise.

In the essence of 'full disclosure', bear in mind that I use the term 'discipline' very loosely.... if something happens to break my routine, the world doesn't fall apart. However, Monday through Friday I'm more likely to stick to a schedule, and the weekends are my 'float zone'.

Is creating a disciplined routine a challenge for you?

Here's something to get you going. I love this speech by Naval Adm. William H. McRaven, where he talks about the importance of starting every day by making your bed. The Admiral says, "If you make your bed every morning, you will have accomplished your first task of the day. It will give you a small sense of pride and encourage you to do another task, and another, and another..... "

As my children moved into their young adult lives, I gave each of them this video to watch / listen. They now start every day by making their bed. Have a listen. Pass it on......

Can natural therapies coexist with medical models of health and healing?

Ros's guest appearance on Australia's SBS Insight program.

Australians are among the highest users of traditional and natural medicines. But GPs and the mainstream healthcare system often don’t recognise alternative therapies. The increase in those seeking alternative therapies, and disillusionment with mainstream medical interventions, prompted SBS Insight to do a program focusing on this very topic. I, and several others, were invited on the program to share our stories of success, and failure, using alternative therapies for all manner of conditions. We were also joined by experts in the field of medicine and alternative therapies. Watch the full episode below.

My use of alternative therapies while being treated for cancer.

Having completed six months of chemo for stage 4 Colon Cancer, in January of 2017 I set off to India's renowned Ayurvedic Research Hospital - Ayurveda Yoga Villa - to partake in a radical Panchakarma detox program. I did not attend the center with the intention of curing cancer. I simply desired to detox my body from the harsh effects of chemo. Is it really a cure for cancer as they claimed it to be? Let me say this..... after returning from India, I had two more major surgeries because the cancer returned. All that cow's urine they made me drink... and yet.....!

There's no doubt that some natural therapies provide health benefits to some people and provide a system for healing that isn't provided by mainstream medical interventions. Do you get where I'm going with this? While in India, I witnessed others have wonderful results while undergoing the grueling detox program. But for those of us with an enquiring mind (or is it skepticism?), it poses another important question ... "Was it Panchakarma that lead to their renewed health status, OR, did they simply benefit as a result of spending an entire month with no coffee, no alcohol, no processed food, no stress, and a daily routine of yoga, meditation, rest, and massages?" Prevention vs bandaids......

I also hasten to add that many alternate medicines/herbal remedies can cause negative side effects when mixed with mainstream pharmaceuticals... for this reason, when being admitted to a hospital for surgery, medical staff will ask if you are taking 'natural' medicines. Did you know that Turmeric is a blood thinner? If you have a friend going through chemo currently, they may benefit from my blog on Chemotherapy Diet - I talk about the pros and cons of alternatives.

Can I suggest from this that we just all get smarter about our lifestyle choices?

I'm a firm believer in 'alternatives'. But just because someone defies the odds and happens to have used alternative therapies, does not  indicate that they 'found the secret cure to cancer'.

Exciting New Podcast Coming Soon

I'll be teaming up with my beautiful friend, Brisbane actress and jazz singer, Cate Shaw, to celebrate the wisdom of being 'older'.

Our Inspiration

My entire life, I never wore a bikini. Not even in my youth when I had every reason to "show off" - flat tummy, taught abs, a tight pert butt.... and no cellulite!

Now, at age 61, riddled with cellulite, a deep, red, surgical scar that runs from breast to pelvis, and sagging, bulging tummy muscles (the result of 3 cesarean births and several cancer surgeries), I purchased my first bikini.

When my daughter asked "Why now?", I told her......

"The best thing about being older is realising that nobody is looking at you".

Do you know the worst thing about getting older? It's realising that nobody is looking at you!

And no, it's not a podcast about wearing a bikini!

Our Aim.....

We'll be looking at the joys and the challenges - from arthritic limbs, to 'no longer giving a damn', embracing wrinkles or going under the knife... there's no judgment here. Whatever your attitude towards aging, we'll be supporting you through it in the best possible way... with grace and joy.

We're living longer, so let's do it with emotional, physical, and financial health. And yes.... let's go there..... we'll talk about the "S" word (and I don't mean 'Senility'!).

When we're done talking, you'll never again long to be in your 20s!

It's in the planning stages, but rest assured you can expect a knock on the door soon, as we'll be approaching you to be a guest on our podcast.

Excited?
