November, 2021 Newsletter

Happy November!

It's the spooky season and as the days get shorter, the mornings mistier, and the trees barer, my thoughts turn to my favorite scary books.

Despite the fact that I'm a mystery writer and spend a lot of time thinking about violent crime, you might be surprised to know that I am a bit of a wimp when it comes to really scary books and movies. After a friend's parents let us watch Poltergeist when we were ten and I couldn't sleep for months afterwards, I've mostly stayed away from horror films as much as possible. But I love stories that make me check the doors and windows or that are set at this time of year and below I'll share some of my favorites.

I'll be doing a few fun virtual appearances in the next month or so, helping some of my favorite crime writers to launch new books and also to share some holiday gift recommendations. I love these conversations and they always make me think about my own craft in new and surprising ways. Check below for details.

Speaking of holiday gift giving, you have probably heard a lot about the supply chain issues that are facing bookstores and many other retail businesses at the moment. If you're going to give books this year (of course you are) think about shopping at your local bookshop early in November to make sure you can get what you want. On my website, you can find places to get signed copies of my books and many other authors will also sign and personalize books as gifts.

To help two subscribers with their gift giving, I'm giving away two signed sets of The Mountains Wild and A Distant Grave at the end of the month. If you have reader friends who you think might like the newsletter and some free books, send them the subscription link below. I'll draw at random from my subscribers and announce the winner in my December newsletter.

Enjoy the spooky season and be well this November!

I love eating pies and I love to bake, but you might be surprised to learn that I don't make a lot of pies. There's a good reason for that. My mom is the best pie maker I've ever met and anytime there is an occasion that demands a pie, or pies, it is in everyone's best interest for me to step aside. There's one exception. I love to make this rich chocolate tart with a gingersnap crust. It adds some nice variety to a pie table and includes two of my very favorite flavors.

Coming in 2022 . . .

In The Drowning Sea, Sarah Stewart Taylor returns to the critically acclaimed world of Maggie D’arcy with another atmospheric mystery so vivid readers will smell the salt in the air and hear the wind on the cliffs.

For the first time in her adult life, former Long Island homicide detective Maggie D’arcy is unemployed. No cases to focus on, no leads to investigate, just a whole summer on a remote West Cork peninsula with her teenage daughter Lilly and her boyfriend, Conor and his son. The plan is to prepare Lilly for a move to Ireland. But their calm vacation takes a dangerous turn when human remains wash up below the steep cliffs of Ross Head. . .
