Grocery Shopping

Have you noticed how groceries have become more expensive during the pandemic? There are lots of reasons for this: supply chain disruptions, labor shortages, climate change, etc.

You can’t control the global food chain, but you can control what goes into your shopping cart. Here are some simple tips and links to s-t-r-e-t-c-h your shopping dollar.

1. We love Homemade: Buy ingredients to cook from scratch instead of expensive prepared or frozen foods. Try these Money Saving Meals.

2. Write it Down: Always use a shopping list to avoid impulse buying.

3. Clip those Coupons: Make use of coupons. Try Basket or Flipp.

4. Choices, Choices: Ounce for ounce, breakfast cereal is one of the most expensive items in the grocery store. Why not re-imagine your breakfast?

5. Swap it Out: Buy chicken or beans instead of a pricier cut of beef.

6. Get it on Sale: Stock up on non-perishable sale items, but only those that you will use.

7. Join the Club: Join a wholesale club, just make sure that your savings exceeds your annual membership.

8. Dah!: Don’t shop when you’re hungry!

    Kilohana Student of the Month

    Chad Haili

Major: Occupational & Environmental Safety Management

Tell us a little about yourself.

I’m originally from Kahaluʻu, Oʻahu. I’m a father to two very smart and energic boys, and I’m married to a loving and supportive wife. After a career as a bus operator for Oʻahu Transit Services, I was afforded an opportunity to go back to school after a 26-year hiatus. After 2 years of hard work and grit, I’ll be graduating this Fall with an Associate of Science Degree in Occupational and Environmental Safety Management.

    What are your future plans?

In the future, I see myself working in the field of safety and facilities management and making a difference for the better. I also want to further my education and obtain a Bachelor’s Degree in Facilities Management from the University of Hawaiʻi – West Oʻahu.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

In the next 10 years, I hope to have gained valuable knowledge and experience as a safety professional. I would like to continue working alongside other professionals in the safety industry and also find ways to give back and share my manaʻo with those just starting out in the industry.

How has Poʻi Nā Nalu helped you through your academic journey at HonCC?

The entire Poʻi Nā Nalu staff helped and guided me tremendously through the past 2 years of school. They reached out to me to make sure I was on track, that I had everything I needed to be successful, and even did grade checks to make sure I wasn’t falling behind. If I needed help with a class, they served as my advocate by reaching out to my instructors to better understand how they could help me succeed. They provided me with important resources such as textbooks, a laptop, workshops, and (pre-pandemic) a comfortable place to study on campus. They provided financial assistance that helped pay for safety certifications. They went above and beyond to ensure that I would not only survive, but thrive as a student. I’m extremely grateful for everything they did to help me.

Anything else you want to add?

I will be the first among 9 siblings to graduate with a college degree. As an older student, I hope my story inspires others not to let age or life circumstances keep you from achieving your goals. I’m proof that it’s never too late.

    Alumna Spotlight

    Brittain Wabinga

Graduation: Spring 2018 - AS in Occupational & Environmental Safety Management

Who are you? How did you enroll in HonCC and in your major?

Aloha, my name is Brittain Wabinga. I enrolled at HonCC in Fall 2015. I had just got out of high school and I did not know what I wanted to major in, and with the help of my family I majored in Occupational Environmental Safety Management. I always knew that I wanted to go to Honolulu Community College to finish my pre-requisites and then transfer to a 4-year university to get my Bachelor's degree. During my second year at HonCC, a friend of mine introduced me to Poʻi Nā Nalu and many opportunities opened up for me.

Where are you currently working or going to school?

After I graduated from HonCC in Spring 2018, I transferred to University of Hawaiʻi – West Oʻahu, majored in Disaster Preparedness Emergency Management, and graduated in Spring 2020. There I got to learn the dynamics about how to plan, prepare, and recover in the case of a natural disaster incident. Due to COVID-19, it was hard finding a job, especially in Disaster Preparedness. However, I hadn’t stopped applying to jobs and in January 2021, I happened to come across a job opening for Hawaii Emergency Management Agency as a Disaster Assistance Office Assistant. I freshened up my résumé, did my research about the agency, and applied and was hired as of March 2021.

How has Poʻi Nā Nalu helped to influence your decisions

and get you to where you are now?

During my time at Poʻi Nā Nalu, they were offering career, interview, and résumé workshops and by attending those workshops, I got to use the skills I learned to apply for jobs and be confident and detailed in my résumé and interviews. Without the workshops, I would not know how to format my résumé in which an employer will take the time to read it and consider me. Same for interviews; if I didn’t know the right things to say, I don't think I would be working at Hawaii Emergency Management Agency.

What was your most memorable experience with Poʻi Nā Nalu?

The most fun experience I had with Poʻi Nā Nalu was in 2017 during the winter break. I and others participated in a program called Kūkalaʻula, where in one week we got to learn more about the history of Hawai’i, why it is important to preserve and care for the land, and why we need to continue to educate future generations.

What tips or words of advice do you have for current PNN students?

One piece of advice is to attend workshops, programs, etc. that Poʻi Nā Nalu offers because even though you might think it won’t benefit you, it might benefit you in the future.
