Moving Into Winter

Adams Creek Cohousing is moving into a new phase of our development as a community. While we progress steadily, but a bit more slowly than we’d like on the formal approvals for our future Hood River community, we’ve had a burst of growth in membership.

Welcome to our newest Equity Members!

Kathleen and Richard of Longview, WA

Jerri of Longview, WA

Ann and Fred of Bayside, NY

Ellen and Susan of Walnut Creek, CA

We also welcome Associate Members!

Currently all of the planned 25 units have been reserved, but we continue to accept  Associate Members to our group and to be added to the waiting list. Please contact friends@adamscreekcohousing.com if you would like more information.

Of course the transition of summer into fall means school resuming for many children, with the Covid pandemic presenting a monumental global challenge for education this year. Our parents and their students continue to dig deep into their resilience and creativity with online classes, a small learning pod at our Adams Creek Cohousing property and ad hoc instruction from some of our Cohousing members. Becki M leads a weekly reading group with Mielle, Zora, Cleo and William, and artist Donna held a
doodle art class with the kids.

Last weekend, Barnaby and Molly with their daughters Cleo and Zora showed the some of the children and adults from Adams Creek Cohousing and the surrounding neighborhood how to simply construct large paper-covered, willow-framed lanterns. They were decorated with colorful fall leaves and artwork between the transparent tissue paper layers, lit from within with small battery-powered lights.

We held a “lantern parade” on Halloween, which was precluded by a casual socially-distanced masked gathering of many of our local members to enjoy hot cider and cookies by a bonfire. It felt so good to gather in person instead of on Zoom to celebrate the changing season, Halloween and our community! Barnaby introduced us to the background of lights and lanterns in the context of a Celtic tradition new to most of us called “Samhain” (for an extensive explanation try Wikipedia or go to https://www.history.com/topics/holidays/samhain). We then began our walk in the quietly darkening neighborhood, which likely in normal times would have been a street of giddy treat-or-treaters running about! We did enjoy quiet conversations on our comradely lantern-lit walk, festively serenaded by Patrick’s harmonica songs.

Stream Discovery

When the members of Adams Creek Cohousing purchased our beautifully treed property with a creek running through it, the creek was mostly overgrown with invasive species, blackberry and English Ivy being the two most prominent.  The ivy was doing extensive damage to several of the mature trees and actually killing some.  Last spring, as the weather warmed up and dried out, a “gang” of community members decided to gather each Wednesday morning and clear out the invasive species and the many years of build-up that was keeping the creek from flowing freely.  What was uncovered is a cheerful, babbling creek, with so much character with its waterfalls and rock formations.  As the creek bed is cleared, we are finding places that we can build for future conversation areas with fire pits, mediation retreats, with a trail just to walk along and enjoy the peacefulness of the water and the beauty of the forest. Then there’s our kids who will be delighted to build forts and play areas once we move into our new home.

Here are some before and after pictures with some of our hard-working crew.

Heartfelt wishes for good health and safe happy gatherings during the holidays.
