Happy New Year, 2020! We wish you lots of energy and creativity with a mind toward community and sustainability. During the last few weeks of 2019 we have been tidying up the shop and rearranging things for a fresh start to our new year. Stop in and take a look. You should also notice a few format changes in our newsletter and a small design change to our logo design. Each newsletter will have a featured article, and news from our shop regarding Community, Creativity, and Sustainability. A new section called "hints and hacks" has been added. In this section you will read about a quicker way to accomplish something (a hack) or some useful information regarding sewing, crochet, knitting or embroidery and more. Of course, still included are links to our calendars and important information. We hope you like the new format! Our feature article for this newsletter is about Victoria Bongard. You may have noticed that we had an intern from the University of Rochester filming us as we went about our business at the shop. Her name is Victoria Bongard, her film is complete and we think it turned out fantastic! We hope you enjoy reading our newsletter. If there is anything you would like to see please send an email to sewgreenrochester@gmail.org with the subject "newsletter". |

Victoria Bongard and her Film Project |
Victoria Bongard is a senior Film & Media Studies student at the University of Rochester. During the Fall semester she did an independent study in film production. For her project she choose to partner with SewGreen to create a promotional video! |
"This project has given me the opportunity to hone my filmmaking skills and practice working with a real-world client. I was drawn to SewGreen's commitment to the local community and the variety of ways that they are involved. From recycling materials to offering classes, I think that SewGreen is an organization that really gives back to the surrounding community while offering a community within its own walls. I have filmed a couple of classes and clubs and have compiled them into a video to showcase all that SewGreen has to offer!" ~ Victoria Bongard |

Wrapping Paper? How about using Wrapping Fabric instead. Or even better, make the fabric into a simple drawstring bag. Many of us wrapped presents in the last few weeks and if we used paper, the paper went from the roll, to the present, and into the garbage in a little over 24 hours! Little fabric bags are easy to make and you can use scraps of fabric. Make them ahead of time for holidays and birthdays throughout the year. We carry lots of scrap fabric, and there is a display of seasonal fabric near the front of the store. This would be a fun project for the Saturday Family Sew Club! |

Thread Thread gets old, and if you're using cotton thread on a wooden spool, or if your thread has not been stored properly it's probably no good. Test your thread's strength by taking an arms length of thread, tying a knot in the middle, then tugging the thread by pulling on the ends. If it breaks, it's too old to use. Toss the thread and up-cycle the wooden spool. Next Newsletter - Proper Thread Storage! |
