*Exponential Performance: 4 Practices Effective SMB CEOs Use To Optimize Their Architecture & Maximize ROI |
Exponential Performance Must Be Architected! Have you ever considered how effective SMB CEOs select technology leadership to stimulate and drive exponential results? Why is there such a wide variety of roles like CIO, CTO, or CEA to name only a few? What criteria determines which role is needed? Aren't these roles all focused on the same IT outcomes? Simply put, the answer is no. Continue reading below to learn why... |

As shown in the diagram above, each technology leadership role has a unique skillset from the others, and each would find it difficult to do the other's job well, with very few exceptions. Knowing then which role to procure, and when, can mean the difference between moving slowly or accelerating delivery to reach your target growth and IT performance objectives. While it's entirely possible for CIOs or CTOs to drive exponential change or transformation, it's often very unlikely because their full-time responsibilities are primarily focused on incremental or sustaining cost reductions, or growth initiatives. Therefore the potential to extract exponential results often lies dormant and hamstrung within the complex architecture of the business—something a CIO or CTO often doesn't have time nor even the skill to untangle depending on the initial starting conditions. This is where certified/chief enterprise architects (hereafter CEA) shine and hit their stride. CEAs are highly specialized in enterprise transformation and skilled in simplifying everything from strategy and business models to enterprise processes and systems as part of a long-term roadmap and timeline that accelerate strategy execution. And most importantly, CEAs have more time to drive enterprise transformation unlike many CIOs and CTOs who are often overwhelmed with just keeping the lights on and developing new products respectively and why they often neglect or constrain enterprise architecture. A common first misstep is for organizations new to EA is to place certified enterprise architects (CEAs) under a CIO, CTO, or other similar technical role, which all but guarantees low performance and often times leads to the failure of the entire enterprise architecture program (hereafter EA program) due to lackluster results. For maximum effectiveness and exponential performance, EA programs should either report directly to the CEO or be placed under a neutral function within the organization and not under any LOB or CIO or CTO unless the goal is to intentionally limit or constrain EA focus to achieve a singular result. When done right, the practice of EA therefore allows companies to create their own luck by designing a simplified structure optimized for execution— and then transforming for the purpose of driving exponential results and maximum ROI. |

The need for an enterprise architect typically peaks after an organization reaches about $100M in revenue but its still important to lay the foundation well in advance. In contrast, before $100M in revenue, enterprise architects proactively focus on mitigating complexity before it becomes a liability with exponential consequences. At about $100M in revenue, "enterprise system collapse" sets in where current architecture starts to decay and hinder an organization's ability to change and deliver high throughput. Due to its large number of complex applications and data integration connections, its systems, processes, and technology rapidly "fossilize" the organization's ability to change thereby eroding agility. EA therefore is the practice that replaces complexity with simplicity in a way that drives exponential performance. This allows the organization to more easily adapt and respond to change in order to achieve rapid growth and scale which is the hallmark of a simple but sophisticated enterprise architecture. |

Enterprise Architecture (EA) Consulting An enterprise architect, or business-technology architect, is a professional master architect who is responsible for translating strategy into a conceptual blueprint and roadmap that is purpose-designed to effectively bridge the gap between strategy and execution in a way that exploits disruptive opportunities through transformation to maximize ROI and business growth. In short, an enterprise architect is a leadership team's business-technology bodyguard for bringing certainty to the CEO's technology agenda. |
