It Starts With Us: Youth Summit The Museum of Freedom and Tolerance in conjunction with the Multicultural Youth Advocacy Network of Western Australia hosted It Starts with Us on Saturday 10 October 2020. Young people aged 18-25 participated in this workshop and were presented by a diverse mix-up of speakers equipping them with tools, stories and skills to change our world. In her opening words Global Diversity and Inclusion expert Fadzi Whande summarised her advice to participants perfectly: “don’t ever think you’re too young to make a difference, you don’t realise the power that you have”. The youth summit was part of MFT’s Human Rights x Human Responsibilities campaign, a 30-week deep dive into the 30 articles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. In particular, the summit framed its provocation around Article 26 of the declaration, the right to education, and created an opportunity for young people to use conversation and storytelling to amplify their own voices for change. Speakers included Shenali Perera, part of the Young Boxing Woman Project, Saadia Ahmed, a journalist and human rights activist from Pakistan, and Roots TV, a media organisation that empowers young people through digital film the arts. Participants considered the kinds of learning not taught at school and discussed subjects they wished the curriculum considered: ranging from creative leadership, to the importance of identity, anti-racism, learning about other cultures, colonisation and other histories, mental health, emotional resilience and economic independence. In these uncertain times, young voices have the ability to articulate both their fears and their hopes with both clarity and compassion. They represent the best of our multicultural society: a rich spectrum of cultures, creativity, languages, histories and stories ready to be harnessed to create a better, more equitable world in which they wish to live. Every generation has the opportunity to remake the world. |

To finish off the year, MYAN WA is excited to be able to return to our forum. This forum will be focused on the topic of mental health self-advocacy by migrant and refugee young people. This event will give you a unique opportunity to hear directly from refugee and migrant young people about their experiences in navigating primary care and mental health services, the ways they and other young people can better advocate for themselves in these settings and the skills and knowledge other young people should be aware of. We will also be discussing findings from MYAN WA’s COVID surveys and consultations in particular around the impact on mental health and wellbeing. This forum will also provide settlement, youth and community sector workers the knowledge on how to educate migrant and refugee young people about the skills and knowledge needed for mental health self-advocacy. The first half of the forum will include a panel with lived experienced speakers and service providers, with plenty of time to ask questions. Then following a networking morning tea, you will have a chance to delve deeper into the topic through round table discussion. Please contact myanwa@yacwa.org.au if you have any questions regarding the forum. When: Friday 30th October, 9:30 AM - 12:00 PM Where: 196 Oxford St, Leederville WA 6007 |
