Past:

 Keiki Cultural Classes

Theme: Indigenous Vibrancy (language, ‘aina, kai [voyaging], hula).  Our first term (January thru March) focused on the vibrancy around our language.  Keiki learned a variety of basics (salutations, counting, colors, alphabet, body parts, etc.).

The Green Farmacy Garden

We volunteered at this space to help with weeding and pruning the garden beds.  After getting nice and dirty, we were treated with an educational tour and a lovely cup of tea from a root that was freshly plucked from the earth. We will be partnering with The Green Farmacy Garden to provide lā’au lapa’au (vegetation to treat, heal, or cure) education which will enhance our interaction with the ‘aina.

‘Au’a ‘Ia: Holding On

Our team took a journey to New York in January to welcome the cast, crew, and Kumu of ‘Au’a ‘Ia.  The performance was intense and absolutely touching. Learn more about this amazing production by watching the trailer: https://youtu.be/nYdzDhB-Ezo

The ‘Umeke Project

Visited Mark Supik & Co. in Baltimore to coordinate a two part ‘umeke workshop.  If you are interested, please reach out.  We will pick this project back up when Mark Supik deems the workshop safe enough to proceed with.

Present:

Sufiya Noelani Van Gieson,

Practice, Practice, Practice

A great way to remain culturally connected is to stay in practice.  The alaka’i are working on hula, implement mastery, chant, and language.

Food Donations

We continue to donate food to a variety of food banks.

Story time with Aunty Leihua

Starting in June each Friday at 1pm, we will be hosting Story Time with Aunty Leihua on Facebook Live to help little ones with nap time.  If you have a suggestion for a short story that you were raised with in Hawai’i, please provide the book title and a picture of yourself to share on social media.  You will be announced as the week’s story pick if chosen.

`Au`a `Ia – Stronger Together

Steadfast, grounded, and united in spirit.  The phrase “`Au`a `Ia” invokes the sacred words of the priest Keaulumoku.  It reminds us that in times of trouble, we must hold fast to each other, our culture of aloha, and our values as we search for the answers to the challenges ahead.

Mahalo nui loa for being an E Ala E Hawaiian Cultural Center member!

As the full effects of the coronavirus began to take hold in March, we restructured our plans for this year to keep our team and our communities safe.  So, although we will not be hosting in-person gatherings this year, we are looking at alternative ideas to serve as value added benefits for our members and our communities.  If you have suggestions, please share them with us! We will do our very best to make them happen.  In the interim, we will be sending out monthly newsletters (mid-month) to keep us connected; suggestions on newsletter content is also welcome.

Earth Day Message from Nainoa Thompson

On this 50th Anniversary of Earth Day, navigator Nainoa Thompson shares an update on PVS, a message on the importance of caring for the earth and a mahalo to our community for coming together during this time of uncertainty.

“It (earth) carries us and our future and the lives of our children for tomorrow into a future that’s going to be good enough as long as we take care of it. One simple rule with nature: what we do to the earth, we’re doing to ourselves.”
