VOLUME 1, ISSUE 4

It’s been a few months since our last issue. We were too focused on planning last month’s block party, instead. It started as three of us asking, “How can we throw a party?” back in April. It takes more work than you might think. But we had plenty of help along the way from the neighborhood association, from local businesses, and from neighbors stepping up and pitching in. It couldn’t have happened without the hard work of dedicated volunteers and community support.

The block party was a hit. The weather was lovely. It was definitely hot—especially by the grill—but that’s July in Indy. We finished off all the drinks donated by 8th Day and Centerpoint. We had local musicians playing in the park. A bunch of neighbors met for the first time, some newly moved-in and others lifelong residents. We raffled off wonderful prizes donated by Stomping Ground, Amelia’s, Kan-Kan, Auradelic, and Nails by Neat. In the street, kids and parents painted a chalk mural. By the end of the night, the street was covered in drawings of flowers, rainbows, and smiley faces. As the sun set and it grew dark, folks stuck around, clustered in conversation and laughing together.

If you’re not already a neighborhood association member, become one today. Your membership will go directly towards supporting community-building efforts like our block party. With this first one under our belts, we now know what we’ll need to do, and what we’ll need to budget, to throw another next year.
