"Here, There & Around" A special program of short films by Bill Basquin with musical guest Kate Mohanty |

Dear family, friends, artists and film community, I would like to kindly remind you that this Wednesday, Feb 15, I will be hosting the screening Here, There & Around a special program of short films by Bill Basquin with live scoring by musical guest Kate Mohanty at Millennium Film Workshop. The program will be followed by a discussion with the artist. This program was curated with the purpose of offering a more intimate look at the work of Bill Basquin following the premiere of his film From Inside Here that is taking place today, Feb 13, at MoMA as part of the Modern Mondays series. 16mm film projection of this program is possible thanks to our friends at Negativeland! Here I share the response I had to Bill's work (in English and Spanish) as Wednesday's program description: PROGRAM DESCRIPTION “Bill's work is intimate, personal and probing. There is a corporeal relationship with the camera that begins with a question, like a traditional interview or a casual dialogue. This temporary or rather “seasonal” interaction with characters and landscapes, triggers a hypothetical proposal about human behavior, masculinity and vastness, in relation to the nature that surrounds it. With his camera, Bill transgresses the observation space to turn it into a performative one in which his presence becomes evident.” – Wednesday, February 15th IN-PERSON: MILLENNIUM FILM WORKSHOP 167 Wilson Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11237 7:30 PM EST - Doors 8:00 PM - Part I Screening (45min) 8:45 PM - Break (15min) 9:00 PM - Part II Screening + Live scoring (25min) 9:25 PM - Q&A with filmmaker 10:00 PM - End Tickets are donation based but highly encourage! FILM PROGRAM: The Ride (2000, 9:40, 16mm) Sexual suggestion, intimate bravado, and emotional ambiguity underlie this meditative adventure story where the up-for-grabs gender of a small town cab driver is the conversation piece. Mission Movie Theatres (1998/2005, 3:00, 16mm) A portrait of the old movie theaters in the Mission neighborhood in San Francisco. Around (2013, 4:30, digital file) The film consists of three 360-degree landscape shots; I used a tripod for the first two shots - the third shot is handheld. The whole of the film functions to invite the viewer into an embodied visual experience. Deer Census (2009, 8:00, digital file) Deer Census is composed entirely of digital still images. The images were recorded and given to me by Nathan Bridgeman, whose is the voice you hear speaking about tax code in Texas as it relates to deer hunting and deer leases. Death Valley Love Letter (2014, 6:20, digital file) Comprised of a series of single-shot 16mm scenes. Photographed while part of a group led by artists Anya Gallaccio and Kelly Eginton. Frank (2007, 1:40, digital file) Frank Murn emigrated from Slovenia and plays the Button Box accordion. Madison (2011, 2:50, digital file) This film uses the form of a single cartridge of super-8mm film (2 minutes and 45 seconds) to describe a particular place at a specific time of year. Martin (2004, 4:50, 16mm) A portrait of New Zealand sheep shearer and farmer Martin Denton. Late December, East of the Sierras (2015, 21:10, 16mm) This film is an in-camera edit that I shot over the course of two sunrises and a sunset. Live score by Kate Mohanty.

Hi, this is Anto. I have created this Newsletter with much love and dedication as a way to keep you in the loop about events I'm organizing and that I am a part of. As independent artists and programmers we often do this work without sustainable financial support. I appreciate you taking the time to open this email, read through, support by coming to the events and/or share with others! You can also donate to my new film in post-production "Pruning" co-directed with Kelley Van Dilla! |
