Raleigh, North Carolina — On March 4th, 2022, mano-Y-ola completed the Louisiana Central Regional Nursery Industry Cluster Report, a 60-page study that took an in-depth look at the area’s nursery history, production, market, and liabilities, and used data-rich sources to identify growth opportunities for the Central Louisiana Nursery Industry. The study was designed to document the Louisiana nursery sector’s influence and present standing, as well as to highlight future opportunities for the industry in the region. In response to the findings, mano-Y-ola recommended strategies such as connecting farmers and the Natural Resources Conservation Service for available grant funding in climate-smart initiatives, offering small business and entrepreneurial coaching for nursery growers, becoming a sector advocate, and commissioning and publishing annual enumeration and performance reports to boost Louisiana Central’s influence in the region. This study will inform Louisiana Central's structured approach to positively impacting nurseries and growers across the 10-parish region. mano-Y-ola’s Outreach Specialist and Program Manager, Adrian Parrott, a Louisiana native, commented on his experience conducting outreach and research for this study: “My father ran a landscaping business, so I spent time in plant nurseries when I was a child. For me, working on this study was a real eye-opener into how nursery owners have been able to consistently adapt to a business that is always changing. There really is nothing else like it in horticulture.” |

This study, which collected data for Louisiana Central to support its business strategy, is different from other studies mano-Y-ola has completed in the past, which have encompassed Community Assessments and enumeration studies. Through the Early Childhood Education sector, mano-Y-ola provides Community Assessments, which study communities and provide clients with the data needed to make strategic, programmatic decisions to meet community needs. For enumeration studies, they combine data, outreach, and algorithms to count migrant families, Hispanic farmers, or Hispanic forest landowners. They have also conducted a study to determine the impact of opioid use on a community, and they developed a business plan for an agency seeking to serve homeless women and children. This nursery cluster report presents an opportunity for growth in a new sector. As a consulting firm, mano-Y-ola’s versatility makes it responsive to diverse agencies, adapting to the nuanced needs of each client by pairing a problem-solving approach with identifying and presenting relevant data indicators to answer questions and solve issues. mano-Y-ola looks forward to continuing its work, expanding its professional reach by supporting different types of agencies across the nation. - written by Jessica Roqueburg |
