Update #14 - April 2022 Newsletter

Friends of Buddina

SCRC Meeting held Thursday 28 April 2022

There were several current Planning Scheme amendments on the Agenda for the April Council meeting, including a small sub-precinct within the Buddina Urban Village.  A further amendment proposed at the meeting corrected additional anomalies (the subject of a petition lodged in March 2019).  The final decision was great news for the Buddina community. The support by Councillors is greatly appreciated.

Cr Natoli said "Council has proven it is listening to the community and has supported the aspirations of Buddina residents.... This is a great win for the community."  The Councillors who supported our community were Cr Joe Natoli, Cr Christian Dickson, Cr Maria Suarez, Cr David Law and Cr Winston Johnston.  Thank you.

There are several more steps in the process, including formal community consultation, following a State interests review.  The history of the issue and further information is available on our website:

Sunshine Coast - New Planning Scheme

Thank you to everyone who responded to the the 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗽𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗰 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 survey/s and  those who emailed submissions to Council about the new Planning Scheme during the period 10 February to Thursday 31 March 2022.  Hopefully Council will have regard for the community’s views and preferences.

YES, we had our say on both the Kawana Waters local planning directions and the Regional planning directions).  Our 2 submissions and what we said are available on our website:

https://www.friendsofbuddina.com/planning-scheme

Sunshine Coast Regional Council issued an email on 8th April saying the "Analysis on preliminary consultation feedback starts". They also said: "Council has received a large volume of feedback during the preliminary consultation period and it will take the project team significant time to process and analyse this information. The outcomes of the consultation will be released in due course and will help inform the drafting of the new planning scheme.  There are many steps in preparing a new planning scheme and we are only in the early stages of this process. There will be other opportunities to have your say, including formal consultation on the draft content of the new planning scheme (expected 2023)."
Lets hope they listen!

Not everyone uses Social Media

For our supporters who prefer not to reference Facebook, here are several updates from our Facebook page where we share articles, development application links and local updates that we think are relevant to our beachside community.

(i)  What's happening

Lights Out, Turtles About!  The messaging remained consistent during turtle nesting season supporting the endangered loggerhead nesting habitat. "Flipping The Switch" and switching off exterior lights and drawing the curtains or blinds from 8pm (or earlier) each night, helped provide a dark beach for nesting turtles and then their emerging hatchlings this season. Several local residents were fortunate to observe the last of the hatchlings for this season, opposite the northern section of the Buddina Urban Village.

(ii)  some stories of interest?

Maladaptation - What a great word!

“Indeed, this year’s floods have once again shown 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗽𝗿𝗼-𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘄𝘁𝗵 𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 “𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁’𝘀 𝘀𝗮𝗸𝗲”can be..."  This Interesting article applies here in Queensland, same as in NSW.  The same concerns apply to both flood prone and erosion prone areas.
"The recent report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change makes it clear flooding will increase in scale and frequency, and 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿-𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 (𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗮 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺 𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗲𝗱 𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗱𝗮𝗽𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻) 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗲𝘅𝗮𝗰𝗲𝗿𝗯𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗮𝗺𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗶𝘁 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗹𝗶𝗰𝘁𝘀."

Coastal cities are sentinels for climate change

Frontline, coastal cities and settlements play a pivotal role in global efforts to adapt to unfolding climate change impacts and to navigate perilous times ahead.…  In coming decades, the risk of coastal flooding will increase rapidly. It could be two to three orders of magnitude greater by 2100, without effective adaptation and mitigation.

This article is an interesting reminder that our Planning Scheme should recognise and “take a long-term perspective when making short-term decisions by keeping options open to adjust as sea-level rises and 𝗮𝘃𝗼𝗶𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵-𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗸 𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀.”

(iv)  Surveys - have your say, don't leave it to others who may have different opinions

The “𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗟𝗼𝗼 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗮 𝗩𝗶𝗲𝘄” @ Mooloolaba is subject to a survey.  Should this Sunny Coast icon be EITHER:

1.  Demolished and rebuilt elsewhere (due to its aged state and accessibility issues) … OR

2.  Leave it where it is and refurbish with better access … AND

3.  Maybe it should be listed as protected – is it an important part of our Sunny Coast identity?

4.  Should Council (or developers) be building more cafes and restaurants on public land & what about the existing cafes and restaurants along the strip?

5.  Do commercial operations belong on public land in lieu of parkland and car parks for public use?

Have your say, please let Council know.  Ensure at Q6 “free-text” to add your comments as the survey doesn’t directly ask any of the 5 questions above!   HURRY, the survey closes 4 May 2022.

Mass Transit

Recently we saw the Sunshine Coast Daily launch the Train for the Games campaign to push for the Brisbane to Maroochydore rail via the CAMCOS corridor in time for the 2032 Olympic Games.  The proposal is to extend the Brisbane passenger rail from Beerwah with stations at Caloundra and Kawana (Birtinya), finishing at Maroochydore near the CBD and Sunshine Plaza. The land set aside as part of the Caboolture to Maroochydore Corridor Study (CAMCOS) is the intended transport route. 50% of the funding has been committed by the Federal Government ($1.6billion) and the other 50% is yet to be confirmed by the Qld State Government. The project is estimated to cost $3.2billion.  The Qld State Government in conjunction with the Federal Government are currently undertaking a $6million business case on this project.  We believe it should be finalized in the near future.  In addition, the $7million business case for Mass Transit is also in the hands of the State Government.  The results of this are not expected until early next year.  Meanwhile, the Sunshine Coast Regional Council remain committed to local Mass Transit along the coastal corridor, between Birtinya and Maroochydore, coupled with higher density planning scheme implications for our beachside suburbs.

Please continue to support and engage with your local Community Groups in seeking the best outcomes from the Mass Transit Project - the challenge continues and we are ALL in this together!
