EARTHWORKS

From my earliest longings to get my hands on material - mud, balls of wool, paper, offcuts from my mother’s dress making, pocketfuls of stones and shells - making things has been the way in which I understood the world. As I got older, quite naturally exploring with paint followed. The very physicality of the act of painting - hand to canvas, brush to paper - has threaded me back together when I’ve been utterly undone.

This year I am celebrating 54 years of painting. Over the years, I have understood my work as a painter as becoming a better listener to the living materiality of these voices. Painting is now less an act of doing and more the practice of deep listening to Earth Stories that flow through me onto the canvas. Painting is my spirit practice - it is the alchemical lens that connects me with my own inner nature and a subtle kinship with Earth, Big Nature and the multiverse of Invisible Worlds.

EarthWorks is the heart of my creative practice. Some paintings in this ongoing series are small enough to be held in the palm of your hand, whilst other paintings are large holding bigger patterns that reflect the very skin of the Earth.

EarthWorks emerge as living energy patterns - a painted ecology containing the resonance of wind, lightning, sunlight on water or the imprint of stone, trees, soil, animals, fire. They hold ecological stories, corporeal presences of Earth Devas that long to be witnessed, remembered and honoured as we teeter on the edge of climate, species and ecological catastrophe. My creative practice is about leaning into these Earth voices that can heal us into remembering that we too are connected in Creation.

My work follows in the spiritual tradition of artists as healers of the soul. Within this lineage, I weave with different creation strands - EarthWorks, THE ART APOTHECARY and Visual Medicine- all holding distinct and intersecting creation resonances.

Please feel free to engage with me about my work - I’d love to hear from you. I have a beautiful, active archive of paintings that you are welcome to ask me about. I am happy to send videos and photos of work. My studio is in London, UK.

When you invite a painting into your world you are inviting the essence of that creation to accompany you and contribute something meaningful to your life. Texture, colour, universal pattern are all metaphors for a deeper connection to nature, our inner stories and dreams…

Hidden within the wild crevices of the natural world is a language longing to share its story.

Each pebble, the glint of light on water, every leaf, the scratch of tree bark and the shape of clouds, all the shades of green and brown that have ever existed are a complex communication system. My paintings are record keepers of these communications.
