Hello! Lots of good news this week, and today is Father's Day–let's get to it so we can celebrate the men in our lives. - Juneteenth has been added by President Joe Biden as a US Federal Holiday! If you don't know, June 19th is the anniversary of the day in 1865 when the last group of enslaved Black Americans were freed by Union troops. This is the first new national holiday established since Martin Luther King’s Birthday in 1983! If you are looking for ways to continue to recognize and celebrate, Harvard Business Review offers some great ideas. Also, check out the new memoir, “Where You Are Is Not Who You Are,” by Ursula Burns, published on Tuesday. Ursula was the first Black woman to become a CEO of a Fortune 500 company, she led Xerox for many years, and the book chronicles her life experience. She's done a bunch of great TV spots to promote the book, a well-rounded 10-minute interview by MSNBC is worth watching.
- Washington Post is predicting a "spending tsunami" by wealthy Americans, with high-end travel already seeing the impact of this (sorry, paywall). The article also raises concerns about the growing chasm between the wealthiest and poorest Americans and how the government can influence this disparity.
- In industry-specific news, the Hotels article "Update on new brands rising in the face of COVID" is an interesting overview of emerging concepts and partnerships including a new techie one in Miami between search-engine Kayak and Life House hotels.
Here's what happened on hertelier: - We started the week with an interview with Petra Deuter, the new CEO of HV Hospitality, covering her career path from airlines to hotels, the exciting new luxury concept she's creating, and the brand's first property on Comino island off of Malta.
- This week, advice columnist Nancy Mendelson helps a reader struggling with a boss that wants to be friends, but with toxic side effects. Have you ever had to deal with an awkward friendship with a superior? If you have any questions about your job (or life) send them to Nancy (nancy@nemglobal.com).
- We've moved the popular F&Be column to Fridays because #foodiefridays! Writer Sloane Warren does some delicious investigation with Verónica Garrido Martínez, Head Pastry Chef, Great Scotland Yard Hotel, who began her baking career at Michelin-star kitchens in Spain and courageously moved to London to keep challenging herself.
- Finally, today is Father's Day! It got me thinking about all the great guys–fathers, brothers, friends, and colleagues–that have shaped my life. Here's a quick chat with my beloved former boss and travel industry leader, Jonathan Tisch, Chairman and CEO of Loews Hotels & Co, about why he's always had women in leadership roles.
FUN FACT: this week marks the end of our third month! Did you know, we have more male readers than female (54% male and 46% female)? I didn't, and this surprised me. Does it surprise you? Thank you for your support–reading, liking, and sharing our stories of women rocking the hotel industry! If you have a friend or colleague that you think would enjoy hertelier please forward this email, anyone can sign up by clicking here or the button below. Have a great week, Emily |
