June NEWS

from Maine STREAM Place, Inc.

In this issue . . . We have a bit more information on what to expect for our Summer LEGO Day Camps. We still have space, see below for how to sign up. We had our Knights end of competitions season party on June 21st. We'd also like to highlight a volunteer, Michael Ferrari, who helped us get on the big screen at Narrow Gauge Cinema. Thanks to all who support us!

Coming Soon . . .

Lego Summer Day Camps

***We still have room for interested campers!***

Session 1: July 15th - 19th, 8:30 - 3:30, 6th - 8th grades

At Lego Robotics camp we will be learning the ins and outs of constructing a robot that can perform multiple functions and complete specific challenges.  The general format for each day will be: 1) guided build, 2) programming lesson, 3) independent challenge!  Campers will learn how to construct a basic robot, create non-motorized attachments such as a plow, wedge and one way gate. The campers will also be introduced to gearing and gear trains while also learning how to construct linear actuators and reciprocating devices.  From a programming standpoint we will cover how to drive the robot while incorporating touch, ultrasonic, light and gyro sensors.  Other engineering concepts will include understanding how center of gravity, friction and sources of error affect robot performance.

Session 2: July 29th - Aug 2nd, 8:30 - 3:30, 3rd - 5th grades

For Lego Engineering camp, campers will start their day seeing demonstrations and following guided builds that teach fundamental engineering concepts and then be presented with a corresponding challenge in the afternoon.

Day 1: Weight Distribution and Center of Gravity – Build the Tallest Tower You Can!

Day 2: Forces, Triangles and 4 Bar Linkages – Build a Bridge that Can Hold the Most Weight!

Day 3: Levers – Build a Catapult that Can Launch the Furthest

Day 4 : Gears – Build the Fastest Motorized Car

Day 5 : Pulleys & Gears – Build an Elevator that Can Lift the Most Weight

Making a special appearance every day will be Lego Man!  Lego Man will present his completed design and challenge the campers to beat his solution.

Fees for camp are $295 per week, with a $75 deposit to sign up, applied to balance. Drop off between 8:30 - 9:00. Pick-up at 3:30. Students should bring lunch and a snack. They will receive a camp t-shirt. Camp will be supported by staff and older students to give campers focused attention and assistance while they work.

If you know someone who would like to attend, send an e-mail (info@mainestreamplace.org) and we will send info on how to sign up.

Knights EOS Party

June 21st

On Friday, June 21st, MSPI hosted a team dinner and bonfire for the Knights team and families; this celebration was to formally mark the end of the 2024 robotics season, with awards for students and mentors for their dedication and hard work! In addition to a great meal, the evening included a group photo with Matt Billian of Billian Moments Photography, awards given around the fire, and laser tag to finish! With summer in full swing and many of the Knights beginning summer jobs, sports and family travel, not all students and mentors were present – but this won’t be the only opportunity for summer fun as a team! More to come soon, and we look forward to spending more time together as a team in the off-season and out of the shop.

A huge THANK YOU to Olive Garden of Augusta for generously donating a portion of the team’s meal! Enjoy a few photos of the awards portion, and one group shot from Billian Moments Photography:

Volunteer SPOTLIGHT

Michael Ferrari

Michael Ferrari graciously volunteered to help our team make a 30-second video in 3 weeks during the month of May. He walked us through the entire process, from learning some basics about videography, deciding what shots to take, developing the script, taking the video, to editing and finalizing the video. This video, advertising our summer camps, was then sent to Narrow Gauge Cinemas and shown on the big screen for the month of June. Hope you got a chance to see it. If not, here's a link. Also check out Michael's YouTube channel where he has lots more great videos to watch about the local area events, organizations, and people.
