December Newsletter

December! We are counting down the days until Christmas vacation here at our house. Next thing we know, it will be 2024. The past year has been full of many ups & downs, but we know they were placed in our lives to allow us to grow. We may not have seen it at the time, but now looking back, it was the case.

Our month is filled with holiday parties, baking Christmas goodies and delivering special gifts. I bet yours is looking the same as ours! We hope you find time in the hustle & bustle of the season to sit down & enjoy family & friends.

Merry Christmas & Happy Holidays,

What I am Reading & Watching

Half way thru this book, and as always, Spenser is my favorite. He is digging into the past of a billionaire whose wife hired him. He is just starting to uncover what the billionaire has done in the past. Spenser is a PI and has aged a lot since the beginning of this series. It is nice to know that we all don't age gracefully. He is still an old school & I can't wait to hear the ending.

Guilty of being a huge Keifer Sutherland fan and this show is pretty good. I normally am not a person who wants to watch anything political, but this show does a great job of making it into a show, not about politics if that makes sense. There are only 3 seasons, and I am just about done with Season 2.

Watch it and let me know your thoughts!

Stocking Stuffers of Rawhides

The good, the bad and the ugly... What's the honest truth? I will tell you, I don't know. On one side, I have seen and heard all the bad from getting stuck in the intestines, choking and reactions. I have also heard that some dogs stay busy for hours with them.

For us, we don't use them. Here is an article and a great graphic to help you decide. Check the ingredients first!

A great alternative if you have access, is soup bones. They are fought over in our home.

Are Rawhide Chews Dangerous for Dogs? - American Kennel Club

When it comes to choosing the right dog chews, the options seem just about endless. You may have heard that rawhide chews aren't good for dogs, or that the

The new virus

Over the last few weeks, my social media feeds have been buzzing about the new dog virus that is going around. After doing some research, I have two images to share. One is the states that have been recorded with dogs coming down with a respiratory illness. Another is the list of symptoms and what to expect. I also linked two different websites that I feel to be reputable. Call me old school, but something with .org is the best.

In one of the articles, Dr. Kurt Williams, who directs the Oregon Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory says, "The three choices are: There is not a new disease out there. There is a disease whose incidence is particularly high right now and it's a known agent, or there's truly something new and novel out there." Right now, there is just not enough evidence to jump to any conclusions.

  • Watch out for the following symptoms:

    • Chronic mild-moderate tracheobronchitis − a sudden or long-term inflammation of the trachea and bronchial airways, according to Merck Veterinary Manual − lasting 6-8 weeks that is barely or non responsive to antibiotics.

    • Chronic pneumonia not responsive to antibiotics.

    • Acute pneumonia that quickly turns severe sometimes in as little as 24-36 hours.

    • Difficulty or rapid breathing, wheezing, dehydration, fever, nasal or eye discharge, weight loss, loss of appetite and lethargy.

The following are our top tips on how to help keep your furry friend safe:

  • Keep up to date on shots and vaccines

  • Avoid doggy daycare & boarding if possible

  • Avoid dog parks

  • Do not allow nose to nose contact

As we continue in the holiday season, just remember that dogs get sick like us. Keep an eye on them closely and watch for any changes in their behavior.

Veterinarians say fears about 'mystery' dog illness may be overblown. Here's why

Reports of an "outbreak" of some as yet unidentified canine respiratory illness are scaring dog owners. But veterinarians and researchers aren't panicking.

Making sense of the mystery illness found across the US

Summary: As of early December, cases of canine infectious respiratory disease complex (CIRDC) have been seen by veterinarians in multiple states. While nationwide numbers are not known, Colorado, New Hampshire, and Oregon officials are working with state and federal veterinary diagnostic laboratories to determine the underlying cause or causes.
