As the summer draws to a close, it has become hard to ignore the changing colour of the canopy or that sandals no longer suffice in the cool of the evening. With this in mind, I thought I would share some of my takeaways from the past season that I would like to hold onto and hopefully carry with me into the colder months, plus a few design related tips for fall. I am also trying my hand at something new by taking examples of what I feel to be visually striking, interior spaces and recreating them with various sourced artwork, furnishings and decorative items. I would love to know what you think of this addition to the Monthly Musings, so feel free to
send along your thoughts!
-I like to run a tidy ship, it allows my cluttered brain to feel less so, but more often than not, the dishes and laundry can wait. This has been an uncomfortable revelation for me, but the truth is, there are only so many summer days.
-Water is a fantastic equalizer, and can act as a great reset for a grumpy child or a difficult day, full submersion is best, but a shower or dip in your local pool will do, as I find it helps melt away the stress and quiet the noise.
-Bed times are important but sometimes allowing the little ones to stay up to watch the sun go down and the stars come out is just as equally important.
-Linen is your friend, dress it up, sleep in it, use it in your home, it wears so beautifully and is the only fabric I can breath in, in the summer heat. Here’s hoping I can successfully transition some
of my fav pieces into fall.
At this time of year, I find my eye being drawn back to the walls of my home and slowly being pulled away from the changing landscape outside my window. I like to take advantage of the change in season by adding more layers to my bedding, often playing up pattern and colour. Now is a great time to switch out cushions, drapery and rugs for something a bit more hardy and substantial. Think “objective – keep out the cold”. It is also a wonderful time to write out a list of achievable jobs and projects on the home front. Those that can be completed by the end of the fall
season and those that can keep you busy in the longer, colder months. Quick and dirty jobs such as repainting, wallpapering, changing out lighting fixtures, updating hardware, rearranging art or furniture are all great little to do’s! Flex the corners of your comfort zones and try for the unexpected; like hanging art low and intimate by the beside, or in a forgotten nook. Source some second-hand, hardcover books on a subject that interests you and dress up your coffee table with a stack, wallpaper the interior of your wardrobe or bookshelves with a vibrant botanical print, paint out your door and window trim in a playful colour, hang a series of mirrors on a wall that will reflect the fall light back into your home and if you are ever in doubt, just add candles.
I hope you enjoy this month’s collection and again, thank you so much for being here!
