"Teamwork makes the dream work!" We are on the cusp of completing our first year of operation, and our growth has gained considerable momentum. It is time to expand the team! I feel so lucky that this team has assembled, and I am thrilled to introduce you to the talented folks who will take Keeping It Sacred to the next level:

Kimberly Dueñas (top middle) will lead our Rosh HaShanah Second Day program. She was born into a multicultural home in California, and she discovered that the best way to explore her dynamic Jewish identity was to immerse and involve herself in the world - beginning with tracing her roots to rural El Salvador, Europe, and Israel. She is a seasoned international Jewish educator passionate about wellness, community healing, and as the Community Coordinator for Jewtina y Co., nurturing the Latin-Jewish community, leadership and resiliency, and celebrating multiculturalism.

Molly Flanagan (top left) will return to Keeping It Sacred this year as our talented Digital Media Manager. Molly is a recent graduate of Wellesley College majoring in Film Studies, and will produce our forthcoming second season of the People Keeping It Sacred webcast & podcast, and provide further support to our social media accounts. Molly is currently working on several exciting projects in and around New York City and Boston, but has found time to continue helping Keeping It Sacred and writes, “I am thrilled to continue my involvement with this special community doing such sacred work in the world!"

Beth Hamon (bottom right) will lead, with Rabbi Miller, the first ever Keeping It Sacred Confirmation Ceremony celebrating our commitment to Torah study. Of that, she writes: "Revelation didn't end at Sinai, it began there. Every time we gather to study Torah we continue the beautiful chain of commentary, criticism and transmission of our foundational texts for generations to come." She is a prolific singer/songrwiter in Portland, Oregon and former girl scout, bike mechanic, and the daughter of nightclub musicians. Her contemporary folk songs straddle the line between Jewish and secular themes of justice, hope, renewal and love.

Sarai Hertz-Velàzquez (bottom middle) is Keeping It Sacred’s first ever Tikvah Intern and will help to design and build Keeping It Sacred programming. She was born and raised in Connecticut (for the most part) and is a rising senior at Wellesley College majoring in environmental studies with a concentration in advocacy and policy, and a minor in education studies. She shares, "I can’t wait to be a part of the KITS community, learning and listening alongside participants."

Jeffrey Silverstein (top right) brings an enthusiasm for Jewish textual and musical traditions and will co-lead, with Rabbi Miller, our monthly Shabbat Services. We were fortunate to have Jeffrey co-lead our Sweet & Sacred High Holy Day Services last year as well as our epic Hanukkah Celebration. He is a current rabbinical student at HUC-JIR in Cincinnati and shares, “I believe song and harmony are big part of #keepingitsacred!"

Rachel Wolman (bottom left) and Rabbi Miller co-lead services together nearly a decade ago, and will once again team up to lead the community through the upcoming High Holy Day season. She is a seasoned Jewish Music Educator and Songleader uplifting campers and staff at camp again this summer. She has deep knowledge of Jewish liturgy and creating inclusive and transformative prayer experiences. She writes she's "really looking forward to a sacred High Holy Day season with the Keeping It Sacred community!"

You are invited to enjoy the excellent talents of these fantastic individuals by registering for our programs at keepingitsacred.com/upcoming-1.

Together, we're all #keepingitsacred...

Rabbi Heather Miller,

Founder, Keeping It Sacred

EXCITEMENT OVER OUR FIRST EVER EMPLOYEE HANDBOOK

Keeping It Sacred is excited to announce the creation of our first ever employee handbook because it is another opportunity to backup our values with actions. Within the handbook, we are especially proud of our “Paid Medical & Family Leave Policy” taken directly from the 2021 Women’s Rabinnic Network (WRN) guide. Keeping It Sacred offers a minimum of twelve weeks per full-time contract of paid family leave for all employees to tend to health-related issues and child birth/adoption, among other things. We are thrilled to be able to set this foundation, as it speaks volumes about what we prioritize and value as an organization- equity, and the room for people to tend to the most important aspects of their lives. And, alignment with the smart and values-based thinking of the Women's Rabbinic Network.

MAZAL TOV, CHARLES!

This past Tuesday, beloved KITS community member Charles came before a beit din to reflect on his life's journey and affirm his Jewish identity. He had a thoughtful discussion and framed his affirmation of his Jewish identity as a homecoming. He was raised knowing his dad was Jewish but this ceremony affirmed his own claiming of Jewish identity for himself. He shared with the beit din:

"My Judaism and the Judaism that's been shown to me, is a religion of "ands"- I can be this and this and this and that thing over there, and I can still be a Jew. No, not a second-class Jew- a great Jew. I feel like a part of something greater- a part of a people- and I only feel this way because I know that this is a people who take me as their own- the good, the bad, and everything in between."

Mazal Tov to him and the the whole Jewish people! We are proud to (as he says) take him as our own, and may we each be inspired by and supported by Torah guiding our every action. To wish Charles well, please email Rabbi Miller at rabbimiller@keepingitsacred.com who will forward your messages along.

CALIFORNIAN JEWISH COMMUNITY SUPPORT FOR SB2

Working with on the ground coalition partners, Rabbi Miller helped to draft this Jewish Community Letter of Support for SB2- The Kenneth Ross Jr. Police Decertification Bill of 2021. Last month we sent it to Assemblyperson Bauer-Kahn, but now it will go to the CA Legislative Jewish Caucus. If you would like to support the bill, please complete the form found HERE.

ROSH CHODESH RACIAL JUSTICE REVIEW

Keeping It Sacred's Rosh Chodesh Racial Justice Review will provide structured space to explore the nature of systemic racism from top thinkers, and help us to reflect upon the ways we participate in, and are impacted by systems of oppression, and what we can and should do about it-- from a Jewish lens.

Understanding the way racial injustice works is the first step in remedying the problems, taking us one step closer toward a world affirming of all. Let’s make 2021 a year of actively remedying racial injustice, a year of Tikkun Olam/repair of the world.

RESOULUTIONS: A PRACTICAL GUIDE FOR SELF-REPAIR

Rabbi Miller's first book, RE(SOUL)UTIONS: A Practical Guide for Self-Repair, is now available as a paperback and reached #1 on Amazon's New Releases!

The book invites the reader into a process of self-reflection for the sake of personal improvement and empowerment. Rabbi Heather Miller draws from thousands of years of Jewish traditional texts, infusing them with relevance and practical meaning to Jewish and non-Jewish readers today. Her writing is warm, accessible, and meaningful.

Reviews:

"Rabbi Heather Miller takes us through the sacred journey of Elul with wisdom, warmth and tremendous intellectual facility. Weaving Torah, Talmud, and Midrash, together with the spiritual guidance of her soul, she creates a compelling, meaningful and easy-to-follow guidebook for this Jewish month of preparation. Her teachings are as practical as they are uplifting, and as personal as they are universal."

"Resolutions is Torah in its essence--uplifting and soul-stirring. This collection is a call to deeper self-knowledge and healing, both personally and universally. A powerful and inspiring addition to your bookshelf!"

"This is a perfect way to enter the month of Elul, with an excellent step by step, day by day guide with delectable soul food along with daily new details to stimulate our intellect. A new MUST for the High Holy Days, and/or year round. Will join the ranks of seasonal Jewish classics!"

"This text is clearly written, beautifully arranged, and thoughtfully presented in a way that allows the reader - at any level of knowledge or experience - to connect with their inner soul, and with their personal mission to improve their life. Highly recommend!"

The more varied the participants the deeper the conversations. Thursdays 11am PT/2pm ET.

Build community affirming of one another’s journey in the sea of Talmud with us! Benefit from the wisdom of Jewish tradition!

What people say:

"Yesterday's class was superb!! I remain impressed by so many things that you do! You are able to keep us on track, share (some of) your knowledge with us, make all sorts of connections to the Jewish and secular worlds, and meet each of us where we are! Kudos to you!!"

"Talmud study has opened a window to that world for me. I love the anthropology and sociology of it all."

"The minority opinions may someday count as much as the majority opinions. It reminds us that things change the Halacha changes and we change each year that we read it."

"We have the opportunity to compare the Halacha we are practicing today with the one they were writing and studying in the Talmud... It has been very interesting how things have evolved how we keep the tradition in our own way."

"I feel very close to this amazing group and I'm grateful to Rabbi Miller for conducting it."

AND just prior to our Talmud Study, we hold space for check-ins and healing prayers for loved ones in need, including ourselves.
