Find My Clan A “Find My Clan” database has been added as part of the updated COSCA website. Users can either scroll through a list of known Scottish clans or search for a surname to discover any links to one or more Scottish clans. If you are a clan chief or leader of a clan society, please review your individual clan webpage. Let us know if you would like any changes. Visitors can search for their clans by using the "Search Surnames" page. COSCA has also developed a “quick response” (QR) code flyer so that visitors to your events can quickly access this database on their own cellphone or tablet. Connecting with COSCA With the newly revamped website, you now have different ways to connect with COSCA. The Authorized Delegate is the single point of contact for all current Organizational Members. Authorized Alternates can be any other individual who has a leadership position within the current Organizational Member and whom has been approved by the Delegate. An Affiliate is an individual, who may or may not be associated with a Scottish heritage society, who has requested to receive the monthly COSCA e-mail letter. Since COSCA is dedicated to Scottish heritage societies, individual members are considered Affiliates and do not have access to the private section of the website with Member Services. Meet Alasdair Morrison, Seventeen-year-old Chief of Clan Morrison Dr. J. Ruairidh Morrison, Chief of Clan Morrison, passed away on November 7, 2020 from cancer. Following the chief’s untimely death, his son Alasdair, a 17-year-old U.S.-based high school senior, assumed the role of chief. Alasdair has since graduated from high school and is taking a gap year as he prepares for university in the UK in fall 2022. Alasdair is the first American-born chief of the clan, but he spent his childhood summers at the family home, Ru Ruchdi, in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland, where the family worked on restoring the old house, hiking the hills and bogs of the islands, and helping their neighbors on the crofts whenever possible. Building Society Membership through Social Media Now more than ever, Scottish heritage societies are relying on social media to build their networks. However, Facebook “friends” and Instagram “likes” do not translate directly into membership dollars – unless you create a solid online presence and implement an ongoing campaign. Your goal is to get as many appropriate “followers” as possible – much like Facebook “friends.” This will ensure that your followers will see future posts. One way is to tap into the list of followers of other popular accounts by following them. If used strategically, your website and social media efforts can be effective in attracting new members. You need to develop your strategies, identify the project managers within your organization, and implement your plan consistently.
