Inner-Cultural Communication

I recently had the honor of leading a webinar with the TESOL International Intercultural Communication Interest Section (ICIS) where I presented a process for cultivating lifelong learning for professional and personal growth.

One aspect that drew particular attention was my discussion on "inner-cultural communication" or the act of engaging in internal dialogue as a pre-requisite to engaging in intercultural dialogue with others. Through this process of inner-cultural reflection, we develop a greater awareness of how we view ourselves and the world, and what has shaped these perspectives. From here, we can discuss our identities with greater clarity as well as set clearer goals on how we want to shape ourselves and our lives.

Wellness at the Center

The graphic below puts wellness at the center of life and can be useful as a framework for how we plan for learning and growth. After all, isn't this the point of striving for personal and professional growth?

We can use this model to identify our own and others' goals (students, colleagues, kids, friends, etc.) and then find resources, strategies, and practices that support the process of attaining these goals. Understanding how each dimension of wellness supports other dimensions is also important. For example, if you aren't getting enough sleep or exercise, how might this affect your emotional and intellectual health?

Quote

“Never get so busy making a living that you forget to make a life.”

– Dolly Parton

Question

What dimension of wellness are you ignoring that would benefit your goals?

Until next week,

Ramin aka "Dr. Yaz"

p.s. Here's a cute cat moment while writing this week's 360. :)
