VALE DOUG NAPIER

1937 - 2023

Hensman Park Tennis Club mourns the passing of a true Club Champion and Tennis Legend.

Born in 1937 and growing up in and around South Perth, Doug joined the Hensman Tennis Club in 1949 and had a long and distinguished playing career locally, interstate and overseas. He holds the record for the most Singles Titles at Hensman, was at one stage the number 1 ranked player in WA, represented WA in the Linton Cup where he recorded a victory over Rod Laver in 1956, played in the Australian Open Men’s Singles Championships and was selected to represent Australia on numerous occasions in international veteran events. Doug was best known on the court for his competitiveness but also his great sportsmanship, not to mention his ripper left handed serve.

In addition to a stellar playing career, Doug held numerous roles on the Hensman Park and Tennis West Boards. He is a past President and Life Member at Hensman and a former Tennis West Board Director and Chairman of the State Selectors. He was instrumental in the running of the WA Open and was also the Club Coach for a long time. His name is lettered in gold on Honour Boards all over the state.

Much more than just a lifelong and passionate Tennis Player, Doug was an avid cricket fan, a tireless volunteer, a proud Freemason, a golf enthusiast, a talented artist, a loving family man. Along with his beloved wife Margaret, Doug leaves a wonderful legacy behind in his 3 children, 9 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.

His reputation as a true "Tennis Tragic" will live on at Hensman and in the wider Tennis Community.

HENSMAN PARK AGM

Thanks to all who attended the AGM on Saturday.

Some ominous clouds and a bit of rain didn't stop us from coming together to discuss the past year and plan for the next one (and have a few drinks at the Bar afterwards!).

Welcome to the Board Clare Hughes in the role of Social Events Director.

A huge and well-deserved congratulations to our newest Life Member, Graham Walker!

SOCIAL PLAY TENNIS

Do you wear through your shoes too quickly and wonder why they haven't invented a softer surface to run around on?

Do you think Tennis is the greatest sport in the world and wonder why all your friends do other silly sports?

Do you feel like you burn too many calories on the court and dream of finding a fun way to replace them with wine?

Come along to Social Tennis and you can fix all of those things!

Grass + Mates + Beer!

Women's Social - Wed & Thurs 9am

Men's Shed - Wed 1:30pm

Mixed Social - Fri & Sat 1:30pm

*beer can be replaced with coffee in the mornings if you prefer.

MEMBER PROFILE

LUCAS MCKENZIE

At 9 years of age, Lucas is the youngest of the McKenzie clan, but he's already looking to out-Ace the rest of his Tennis loving family!

Lucas has been hanging out at Hensman since before he was born, coming down to watch fellow Tennis lovers Dad Josh, big brother Thomas and big sister Isabella, and pick up some tips.

Seems it's worked too; he officially became a Junior Member in 2020 at the age of 6 and has been playing League ever since, bringing home 3 Pennant Titles for the Club. Last week Lucas won his very first Boys 10&U Singles Title at the 2023 O3K J125 WA Day Junior and Open at Sorrento Tennis Club!

Lucas has been coached by Mark Leuba and Jess Moore at HPTC and his favourite Tennis player is Jannik Sinner.

It's not all about Tennis though, when the courts are too soggy for a hit Lucas loves to play basketball and soccer.

Keep an eye on this young gun!

TENNIS TRIVIA

DID YOU KNOW... Rufus the Harris Hawk is employed by the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club as the official "Bird Scarer" for Wimbledon. Rufus scans the skies and petrifies the pigeons that would otherwise cause chaos on the courts.

You can follow Rufus on his Facebook page, Instagram account or join his Hawk Herd of 10,000 followers on Twitter.

There's a great joke in here about him being a Millenial... Falcon.

(My kids said no.)
