Douglas County Commissioners need to hear from you by the end of February!
The sooner the better.
Your voice matters. The Douglas County commissioners want to hear from YOU in regards to the Renewable Water Resources (RWR) proposal. People across the Valley and around the state are joining together to fight the proposal that would export water from the San Luis Valley to Douglas County. Our goal is to send over 1,000 letters from people like you who care about the Valley, our public lands and maintaining intact ecosystems. Send them an email or a letter with your thoughts. Join in the struggle for common sense!
Join this annual community conversation about our water, threats and opportunities. Engage and learn how you can help sustain the agriculture, environment and economy of the San Luis Valley. Registrants will receive more information and a Zoom link prior to the February 26th event.
March 11th - 13th, 2022. This virtual festival features information about wildlife use of abandoned mines along the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, Flammulated Owls at the Hot Creek Research Natural Area in the San Luis Valley, and raptor education by Hawks Aloft.
The RWR Proposal directly threatens our wildlife and fragile wetland ecosystems.
"Wetlands are both the Valley’s most valuable and vulnerable ecosystems. While only representing 2% of Colorado’s total area, wetland and riparian habitats support over 80% of wildlife species throughout their lives" (Wetland Dynamics, p 36, 2019).
Sandhills migrate along the Rio Grande Corridor, connected by riparian and wetland habitats. The San Luis Valley is considered to be one of the most important stopovers along this route. A water diversion project in the Valley would no longer support the seasonal migration of countless bird species, such as the Sandhill crane.
