Happy Day, my friends!!!

 

And indeed, it is a happy day! September has arrived, ushering in the end of summer and the promise of cool, crisp mornings just around the corner. The time for outdoor walks in the park, leisurely bike rides, picnics, and gatherings is merely a few weeks away. Without a doubt, Fall and Spring are my favorite seasons of the year.

 

Although today is September 2nd, this newsletter edition recaps the events of August. During August, we published two blog posts, both of which continue the themes from July. In the blog post "The Law of Polarity: Navigating the Spectrum," we explore how navigating this law involves choosing one's position on the polarity spectrum, ultimately leading to empowerment through conscious decisions and personal growth. The second post, "The Skill of Habit Formation," provides straightforward steps to practice this skill, complete with a practical example. You can find the links to these posts below. I eagerly anticipate reading the comments and thoughts that arise as you explore these topics.

 

I'm thrilled to announce that WellBeing w/Coach Edna is now offering personal fitness training as a service. This addition comes in response to requests from community members and clients, motivating me to undergo training myself. After months of studying and delving into the intricacies of our remarkable bodies—how they function and how we can maintain them in peak condition—I achieved NASM Certified Personal Trainer status during the last week of August. The website will be updated in September to reflect this new service.

 

This edition's feature article delves into a recently published scientific paper, highlighting the intriguing correlation between the length of meditation practice and improved health outcomes. This breakthrough contributes significantly to the field of consciousness and mindfulness, providing compelling evidence that our state of mind profoundly influences our body's capacity to stay robust and healthy.

Benefits of meditation against viral infection and others...

Mind-body practices such as meditation have long been known to lead to a host of health benefits, including improvements in the stress response as well as immunity. Numerous studies carried out in recent years suggest that there is a correlation with length of meditation practice and improvements in physical and psychological health (Chang et al., 2011) along with corresponding improvements in the blood environment of practitioners (Bhasin et al., 2013; Epel et al., 2016). The scientific paper "Meditation-induced bloodborne factors as an adjuvant treatment to COVID-19 disease" published in Brain, Behavior, & Immunity - Health Magazine, Volume 32, October 2023, highlights that:

  • Length of meditation practice may influence susceptibility and management of COVID-19.

  • Blood plasma from meditators can limit viral infection in cultured lung cells.

  • Meditation elevates SERPINA5, a major player in coagulation and the immune response.

  • Regular meditation practice can improve well-being by modulation of biological processes.

Does Health and Wellness Coaching qualify as a reimbursable expense under HSA/FSA accounts?

The IRS determines what can be reimbursed by an HSA/FSA. Because health and wellness coaching is an emerging profession it is not yet specified in the IRS code language, however the IRS has issued guidance to the National Board of Health and Wellness Coaching (NBHWC) that out-of-pocket costs of health and wellness coaching services can be a “qualified medical expense” if the services are provided for the treatment or prevention of a disease.

 

Given the current IRS language if a client/ patient (taxpayer) is referred to health and wellness coaching by their physician as a treatment for a medical condition/disease, this would be reimbursable as outlined above.
