YOU'RE INVITED

For the past 11 years, Steven Marx has led and inspired our nonprofit organization as a visionary founder, Volunteer Executive Director, farmhand, and continuing Board President. During that time, Steven has secured major funding for the establishment of City Farm SLO, built a strong employee team and developed robust youth education programs. He also has engaged the local community in the life of our urban farm with volunteer days, festivals, and public-school field trips.

Under his leadership, City Farm SLO has become a model in sustainability through its implementation of regenerative agriculture practices and has enriched the lives of hundreds of underserved youth.

We invite you to join us on October 3rd to celebrate Steven's work as he retires from his position of Volunteer Executive Director. Hear from a world leader in regenerative agriculture and City officials, meet our vibrant new staff members, tour City Farm SLO’s new facilities, and learn about our robust youth education programs and plans for infrastructure expansion.

FARM CLASS RETURNS

After a pause in programming due to COVID-19 restrictions, we are thrilled to welcome the next cohort of Pacific Beach High School (PBHS) Students enrolled in our Farm Class. Since 2013, we have partnered with PBHS to serve students in their adapted continuation schooling program. Students meet twice weekly for farming classes including team building workshops, employment readiness training, and hands-on nutrition and food literacy lessons. Students learn to grow, harvest, and cook wholesome foods at the direction of City Farm SLO staff with support from PBHS instructors.

In the past couple of weeks, students have learned about soil health, compost, and plant propagation. They have prepared beds for planting, experimented with seed starting, grilled fresh corn, and have helped manage our sheep. Follow along with Farm Class on our Instagram @cityfarmslo.

HARVESTLY HARVEST FEST

Come see us at SLO Creek Farms on Sunday, October 19th for the Harvestly Harvest Fest! Enjoy free samples, live music, kids activities, flower-picking, and most importantly meet your local Farmers and Harvestly Vendors!

A portion of event proceeds will be benefiting City Farm SLO's youth programs.

NOTES FROM FARMER SHANE

Transitioning into Fall: Although it’s been a warm September, the Summer season is winding down, and we are starting our transition into fall crops. Our warm season crops like corn, melons, and tomatoes have hit their peak harvests and will be declining soon. This is a bitter-sweet transition because the decline of some crops can lead to the addition of others. Our popular galia melons will be replaced with garlic that we saved from last spring’s harvest, and our corn patch will be replaced mostly with root vegetables and brassicas like broccoli, cabbage, and cauliflower. Most of our winter crops can grow year-round in our climate, but in the cooler months there is a lot less pest pressure, so we can have more success with things like broccoli that pests find delicious.

In our high tunnel greenhouse, we can extend the warm season a bit longer, but eventually those crops will decline as well. Peppers and cucumbers will be replaced by lettuce and other leafy greens, beets, and carrots.

Look out for our Fall veggies on Harvestly or at the Farm Supply Farmer's Market.

FACES OF CITY FARM SLO

Meet Adriana Arias,

YEP Communications & Media Coordinator

Adriana is a senior at Cal Poly SLO pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Business with a minor in Agricultural Communications. She grew up surrounded by agriculture and has a family background of farming in Mexico.  Adriana also works with the local FFA region in an administrative role including event preparations. She is so happy to use her experience to work with students in YEP at City Farm SLO.

We are so lucky to have her on our team!

WHAT'S GROWIN' ON?

We are savoring our warm season crops while we have them! These Sweet Italian Peppers are a particular favorite.

We love to roast these peppers whole with olive oil, salt and pepper, then throw them on top of sourdough toast for a pepper sandwich... YUM.

Find these and more at our Farm Supply Farmers' Market booth and on Harvestly.
