NOTES FROM FARMER SHANE

Our Continuous Flow-through Vermicompost System (AKA Worm Farm) is an important piece of the soil health puzzle at City Farm SLO. This compost system cultivates red wiggler worms to harvest their waste known as worm castings or vermicompost. Food for the worms (food scraps, newspaper, yard waste) is added to the top of the bed, and vermicompost is harvested from the bottom. This process allows for continuous harvests of biologically-rich compost without disturbing the worms or their environment.

Vermicompost is one of the best fertilizers found in the natural world because of its nutrient content and the diverse community of microbes it contains. We regularly add this "black gold" to our gardens to build soil health and ultimately boost vitality of our system.

Our red wigglers have been really enjoying this summer's zucchini and squash!

FACES OF CITY FARM SLO

Meet Mateo Trujillo, Youth Empowerment Program Intern

Mateo started as a student in our Youth Empowerment Program, and now he is helping educate other YEP students through in his Summer Internship.
For the last 8 weeks, Mateo has worked to apply his knowledge from YEP workshops to farm our 1.25 acre YEP Farm.
Gissel says, “He has worked on setting up irrigation, learning the importance of having a plan for a farm but also being flexible to understand that plans change. He’s a very hard worker and comes with eagerness and an open mind. He is a quick learner and today he told me he wants to have a farm or garden to apply what he has learned. He has also been great helping the YEP summer cohort in the past weeks!”
Thanks for all of your hard work, Mateo!

WHAT'S GROWIN' ON?

Tomato Season is in full swing, and we are loving our variety of beefsteaks, heirlooms, and cherry tomatoes.

Find all varieties at our booth at the Farm Supply Farmers' Market or order for delivery through harvestly.co

Pro Tip for Home Gardeners: Keep tomato plants consistently watered until they begin to set fruit, then let the soil almost dry out between waterings. A little stress encourages fruit production.
