Investing in the Future

This year we have been putting heaps into our education programme at Matipo Primary; teaching tamariki about caring for Te Wai o Pareira and the wider environment. We are happy to have been able to offer at least two lessons for every junior and middle school student and five lessons for every senior school student!

Our goal is always to connect tamariki to their place; helping them to see the interconnectedness of the natural world and the way that humans impact it for better and for worse. We consider the work we do with children one of the most valuable things that we can put resources into, it is our way of investing in the future and hopefully creating a better world.

We are so thankful to Chez Panapa and Shannon Vlasich who both deliver our education programme. It has been no small task providing so many sessions and engaging with more than 400 children.

They have done an amazing job of providing the tamariki with fun, hands-on learning and helping them understand their role in protecting the environment. We have been getting great feedback from students, teachers and parents alike. We also want to say thank you to Dion Pou, Amber Aratema, and Jane Thomas for helping to create our lesson plans, and Matipo Primary School for allowing us to come in and run these sessions, it's been awesome working with the team there.

A New Trapline

In our efforts to enable native birds and plants to thrive along the banks of Te Wai o Pareira and tributaries we are currently operating three traplines around the awa. With these up and running successfully we are looking to extend our trapping programme.

We plan to start a new line at the north end of Taipari Strand near the Waitemata Rowing Club. This will be another step in our efforts to create a trapping halo around the peninsula. Linking up the lines run by ourselves and other groups.

We are looking for some people to get on board with this so If you want to do something to help our native birds and plants consider joining our trapping team. We need help to clear and reset traps, the time commitment will be approximately an hour a month, we will provide the equipment and training.

Water Testing and Quality

We have recently revamped our website, it now has a lot more on it and is looking so good. Thank you to Olivia Clarkson for all the work that she has put in make it more beautiful and functional.

Notable updates include a new section on our freshwater testing data. Now it’s easy to keep up to date with the results from our Waicare Testing programme at Tawa Esplanade.

You can also check out our updated Pollution Dashboard. This is where we post the water testing results from Te Wai o Pareira as well as overflows and other pollution events. If you’re into data you’ll be interested in this one.
