Research Insights:

What is the evolutionary advantage of menopause?

Women today outlive their ancestors, spending approximately 40% of their lives in menopause. Considering evolution's purpose of species continuation, the advantage of post-reproductive longevity raises questions. Some theories propose menopausal women enhance tribe survival by aiding childbirth, providing sustenance, and assisting with childcare. However, this article delves deeper, suggesting menopause parallels breastfeeding, and the purpose is to benefit infants. Loss of calcium from bones and elevated cholesterol enrich breast milk, while hot flashes and insomnia aid in infant care. Given these advantages and extended lifespans, rather than reserving estrogen for symptomatic cases, should we consider correcting menopause with estrogen universally? It's an interesting question...

Favorite Recipe:

Rachel's pick: orzo with red wine vinegar to taste, fresh tomatoes, cucumbers, avocado, Kalamata olives, chopped hard boiled eggs, feta cheese, everything but the bagel sprinkled on top

"A few of our favorite things:" Sombra

Anna 's pick: This was in my Amazon cart this morning. Going back thru my orders. I began ordering it in 2019, the 2 oz jar then few years later was ordering the 4 oz. Now I see I order an 8 oz about once a year. My chiropractor used it whenever she manipulated my back. I use it on anything sore, particularly my neck and shoulders and rub a little behind my ears and it puts me to sleep.

Feels all warm, tingly and I love the smell. Wonderful relief!

What we are reading:

Tough Broad by Caroline Paul

Jean's pick: I love this book, it turns its nose up at the notion that women 50 and older can't be adventurous or athletic. Caroline Paul discusses the science that confirms having a positive attitude on aging and refusing to bend to fear or stereotypes can do the body good. She profiles numerous women who scuba dive, surf, race BMX bikes and more in defiance of what our culture might not-so-subtly suggest about age-appropriate outdoor activities for women.
