Hello, Residents for Resilience!

 R4R UPDATE:

I hope you had a wonderful October and are getting ready for the Holiday Season!  Our new organization has had a very busy October with city, county and state meetings that dealt with many of the issues that worry all of us, and almost all of them had something to do with water.  Check out Broward County TAC Meeting and Blue-Green Algae Task Force info and

registration for "up-coming" meetings.

The most important information I can share with all of you, that I continually hear at most of these meetings, is that Climate Change isn’t coming -- it’s already here. Our team hopes to hear more in-depth information and innovative recommendations from our county, city and other coastal cities on adjustments that may have to be made, as we all adapt to this ever-changing climate of

more frequent flooding and severe storms.

We kindly suggest that you try to attend some of these important meetings, many of which we are now being invited to, so that you can hear what we hear.  Your comments are welcomed!  I have included November meetings you may want to attend.  The Broward Water Advisory Board meeting on November 3rd should be very informative, and as I stated in last month’s letter, I will be joining an outstanding group of speakers and panelist at the Southeastern Florida Regional Climate

Leadership Summit, to speak on our R4R’s top concerns.

ADVISORY BOARD

I am excited to announce that R4R now has a very impressive Advisory, and Expert Advisory Board.  This amazing team will meet this month to discuss waterway restoration projects we are currently working on and any future projects they feel need to be added to our calendar.

LIVING SEAWALL PROJECT UPDATE

To introduce all of you to our new Advisory Team, and to hear about the Educational Marine Water Quality Restoration Projects we are working on, we are planning a January launch of our new “Zoominar,” Let’s Talk Water 4-Part Series---a great way to start the New Year!   How many of you remember a time when you could actually swim in our canals and waterways, and marine life was plentiful? This group of Marine Specialist will share with all of you our proposed projects to begin the needed remediation to hopefully

make our priceless waterways swimmable once again!

WE NEED YOUR HELP!

This R4R Zoominar series is planning to invite top WATER Specialist and city, county and state leaders to speak and we are in need of a fun catchy title

suggestion to help us kick off our series.

Here’s a few suggestions we received so far:

  • Navigating the Waves: Discover innovative techniques being used for effective flood protection within our communities.

  • From Crisis to Conservation: Restoring the Health and Vitality of our Waterways.

  • Beneath the Surface: Is your water safe to drink? Is it safe to go into the water? Just how high is that salt water rising from below the surface?

  • Weathering the Storm: -Will strengthening the resilience of our communities against impending storms help mitigate the Insurance Crisis?

We look forward to receiving your suggestions.

WELCOME!

We would again like to welcome our new members who are joining our team daily!

Don’t forget to send in your questions, comments, and pictures of polluted waterways. Your eyes, ears, and instincts are needed!

Thanks for Caring!

May you and your family have a Happy Thanksgiving!

THE UNDERLYING PROBLEM

But there’s an underlying problem that’s been skipped over in most accounts of the flooding. South Florida is still stuck with a drainage system developed more than half a century ago, one which prioritizes the well-being of the sugar (and other) farms in the Everglades Agricultural Area over almost everything else.
