AUGUST! Summer is quickly fading away - and August is always the month where The Good Eggs books end. So with this month, we have come to the |
end of Book 1. The year sure flew by! Starting in September, we will journey through Book 2, The Good Eggs Travel the World, which helps kids learn about diversity. More about this next month! |
Before we meet our August Good Egg, here's what's new: |
In July we EGGED The Detroit Educational Takeover. Detroit Educational Takeover has an amazing mission of helping the kids of Detroit achieve a quality education through action, trailblazing, |
advocacy, and leadership. Some of their programs include STEM, Math and Literacy Tutoring, along with a scholarship initiative. We were able to help by providing several educational tools and materials from their wishlist that aid in these areas, such as math workbooks, flashcards, puzzles and more. This is a powerful organization empowering our young people! |

WHAT ARE THE EGGS UP TO THIS MONTH? (Book 1, Chapter 12) August - Manners In Chapter 12, the last chapter of The Good Eggs, the Eggs invite Benedict to join their families on their annual camping trip. In the car ride to the camp, Benedict was quite rude and demanding. He continued to be disrespectful and rude once they arrived at camp. Throughout the entire trip, |
however, Benedict was continually annoyed by some little Eggs that kicked sand in his roasted marshmallow and woke him up playing tag. All he could think about was their lack of manners, when all of sudden he realized his own lack of manners were causing the same kind of frustration among the Eggs and their parents. He vowed to do better and he did! He even got the group together to read to the children in the hospital upon their return from camp. |

It's on! Starting Monday, August 14 through Friday, September 8, The Good Eggs Foundation will be a proud participant in the: |

A Note from Rocket: "The Rocket Companies Community Challenge is a month-long fundraising competition featuring hundreds of nonprofits across the nation. The goal is to help these nonprofits raise as much money as possible for their respective causes. Those that raise the most will receive grand prize donations from Rocket Companies. Last year, we helped participating nonprofits raise over $1.3 Million! The Community Challenge was created as a platform for our team members to rally behind the causes they're personally passionate about - while sharing the mission with their friends and family. But support can take many forms. You can donate, become a fundraiser or be the "hype team" for nonprofits participating in the Challenge. Sharing on social media also has a big impact. When you share a fundraiser on social media nonprofits can get up to 3X the donations than those that aren't shared." SO - check out our page and please share - THANK YOU! : ) |

Now let's meet our August Good Egg! |
Larynx Cancer struck my mother, and we started the Betty Harris Larynx Cancer Awareness Center (BLCAC) which helps inform and educate people about Larynx Cancer before having a laryngectomy. Due to COVID, we had to either pivot or choose to close. |
We decided to pivot and not close, which is how we became The Bettye Harris Foundation, where our mission is to educate and provide community service programs for the community. |
We support children, seniors, and all others by offering different community service programs to help improve their quality of life as they go through their treatments. |
What we find most challenging in our work life is that we do not have enough hours to help all the people that need to be helped, nor do we have the resources necessary to help as many people as we would like. |
Yes, I do have a success story! When starting (BLCAC) we did a hidden next screening, and one of our choir members found out that he had a tumor on his throat. And he tells me to this day that if it were not for us having the |
screening (because he did not go to the doctor often) he would have never known he needed to get help for his throat. I must also add that he is a bass singer; without this help, he would never have been able to continue singing. |
The future of the Bettye Harris Foundation is very broad. We have done several projects, such as Hat not Hate; we are working with Lift Up A Child to do the first Community Baby Shower of Eastpointe and Michigan Works to get our young people jobs. |
So we desire to continue on the road we are on so that our future can be bright and our mission can be passed on from generation to generation. |
We are planning another health screening for later this year (date TBD), and we hope to schedule a summer reading session for the children (we are working with Lift Up a Child) so they can start reading The Good Eggs Series! |
Thank you, Dr. Early, for providing an important detection tool for people in the community! And - for also working with Lift Up A Child (our interview from last month) to bring important life-changing resources to those in need. |
See you in September when we begin our Book 2 diversity travel series! AND - thanks for being a Good Egg! Kindly, Sandy Sandy (Ciaramitaro) Mals Founder and President The Good Eggs Foundation |
