In Honor Of Kamehameha I Each year, we celebrate the birthday of King Kamehameha I. Due to COVID-19, this event was canceled. However, we at E Ala E Hawaiian Cultural Center (EHCC) would still like to recognize Kamehameha. Typically, EHCC participates in an important event at the U.S. Capitol Visitor Center in Washington, D.C. In the Center, there are two significant statues representing Hawai`i: King Kamehameha I and St. Damien. Our kuleana (responsibility) is to join other Hawaiian cultural groups by performing chants and hula that honor Kamehameha, known for uniting all the islands of Hawai`i. During this ceremony, we pay tribute to Kamehameha by draping 10’ long fresh flower lei over his extended arm. In a separate lei draping ceremony on the same day, we also honor St. Damien of Molokai, also called Father Damien, a Belgian priest who devoted his life to missionary work among Hawaiian lepers and became a saint of the Roman Catholic Church. |
