Club members and associates past and present may have noticed the passing on June 19 2022, of former club member Paul Von Zalinski (Von, Vonny) aged 79. Born with salt in his veins, Paul was a renowned sailor, pioneer, surfer, fisherman, and surf lifeguard. He “joined” the then Muriwai Surf Inc, aged 13-14 yrs in the later 1950s. A keen participant in all aspects of the club’s activities he spent years on the club committee and was club captain in the mid-1970s and a member of Northern Region helicopter and jet boat rescue squads. He is a fondly remembered friend of the Auckland Surf Lifesaving Association Management Committee of the 1970s and 80s, and by the Muriwai club.
The Muriwai Lifeguard Service extends its condolences to Paul’s partner Heather, daughters Lydia and Rachel and all family members. Pursuant to Paul’s wishes, a private family cremation has been held. A celebration of Paul’s life and involvement in surf lifesaving will take place at the Muriwai surf club on Wednesday 20th July from 2pm.
