Why Should YOU Dance?

Dance Beyond Parkinson’s is an inclusive Dance Program. No matter what stage you are in your Parkinson’s journey you are welcome. Whether you are recently diagnosed and in excellent physical condition, or in a wheelchair, or somewhere in between, this class is for you. Each participant works to their own ability and gets a great workout and a fun experience in the process.

“The dance class to me is like a PD Support Group. We get together, chat, take the

class, and then chat more. This is one of the few places I feel comfortable making

mistakes and not over think about my symptoms. We are a group of like individuals

taking the class with limited opportunities to have the camaraderie of others in public.

This class gives that to us. The smiles, laughter, and joy that emit from the room can be

amazing. It is one of the activities I truly look forward to attending on a regular basis.”

Bruce – Dance Participant

Breaking News: Parkinson's Disease Biomarker Found

The biomarker breakthrough was achieved by an international coalition of scientists led by the Michael J Fox Foundation and its landmark clinical study, Parkinson’s Progression Markers Initiative (PPMI).

"This study resulted in the clearest evidence yet that the presence of a particular misfolded protein, alpha-synuclein, can be used to determine if people have Parkinson’s. It is an advance that may soon be used to develop better diagnostics, but more importantly could rapidly accelerate the search for treatments for the disease."

Self-Image in Women with Parkinson’s

Disease

Kristi LaMonica has co-authored on a new paper addressing the self-image changes that women with PD can have! Nice job Kristi! Below is the abstract of her article. The full article can be found here.

"There is a fundamental gap in knowledge in how Parkinson’s disease manifests an affects women throughout their hormonal life cycle, resulting in unmet needs and adversely impacting women’s quality of life. A set of questionnaires was developed and deployed through Fox Insight (open access) to address these issues by gathering data. This is the data from the first survey. The data from the questions regarding self-image were striking. 61% of women report that their Parkinson’s disease negatively impacts their self-image. Here we explore the negative impact of Parkinson’s disease on women to begin to fill the gaps in knowledge."
