NEWS FROM DR. REID
Dear St. Patrick Families,
Welcome back and Happy New Year!
It is hard to believe that the end of the second quarter is next week. Report cards will go home with students on Thursday, January 19th along with their Terra Nova home report (grades 2-5). The Terra Nova home report details information about your student’s performance on the Terra Nova achievement test. The Terra Nova scores reported on the parent report are percentile ranks, not percent of items correct on the test. The score reported on each test (NP or national percentile) compares your student’s performance to that of students in the same grade in the nation. In other words, it ranks your child’s score against a large number of students in the country who took the same test. For example, a percentile of 78 means the student did as well or better than 78 % of students in the country. The 50th Percentile represents the average performance. They also use circles to indicate levels of mastery and the test breaks the overall subject score into categories to give you more information. The three levels are high mastery – this is considered to be a complete understanding of a topic, moderate mastery – this is close to complete understanding, but not quite there yet, or low mastery – this is consistently scoring below proficient. It is very possible to have all three scores in a single subject. A student could easily have a high level of mastery in the computation category while also having a low level of mastery in the measurement category. The scores will give you a bit of insight into your child’s academic progress.
Our 4th and 5th grade students will compete in our School Spelling Bee. The students were provided a list of words to prepare for the grade-level class spelling bees scheduled for next week. Parents do not attend the class spelling bees. However, the parents of the class finalists will be invited to attend as the students compete in our School Spelling Bee. The winners of the school bee will go on to compete in the Diocesan Spelling Bee on Tuesday, February 7th at 9am at the MACS Fine Arts Center on the campus of Charlotte Catholic High School. More information to follow.
Although the cathedral is still under renovations and we attend Mass in the Family Life Center, I am asking that all students continue to wear their Mass uniforms each Friday.
Student Council voted on a Dress Down Day for this month. The day is next Thursday, 1/12. Monies raised will benefit the Ronald McDonald House.
Just a reminder, we have early dismissal, at 11:30am on Friday, 1/13 and there is no school on Monday, 1/16.
