Welp, Round Up Readers, March 12th was Equal Pay Day…a symbolic day representing how much further into the next year women need to work in order to be paid the same (on average) as a man. Despite attempts to narrow the gap, women still earn 16% less than men. Women earn just 84 cents for every dollar a man makes, and, yes, it is 2024! Reflecting on this disturbing fact and in preparation for participating on the panel "Do We Need to Do More to Address Gender Portrayals in Media” at the Better Hospitality Conference in London this week, my research uncovered that inequality isn't just about the gap in pay. According to a multi-year study conducted by UN Women, just 24% of people featured or mentioned on TV, radio, and newspapers are women. And regular RU readers may recall another shocking stat we shared recently in the wake of Barbie-mania, that women held only 35% of speaking roles in 2023 films. Timely reminders that change requires relentless intention and effort! Exactly why I was thrilled to partner recently with Forbes Travel Guide on their 2024 Summit, which had over 50% female speakers! And, more progress: thanks to the efforts of the Women in Hospitality Leadership Alliance led by Rachel Humphrey and a 'Podium Committee' spearheaded by Rachel Vandenberg, the Hunter Hotel Investment Conference hit a milestone!! For the first time in the 35 year history of the conference, 51% of the speakers are from underrepresented groups. Big shoutout to everyone working hard to move the needle towards equality at hotel conferences! Speaking of moving the needle, be sure to register for Bridging Gaps: Gender's Role in Technology Adoption within Hospitality, a webinar sponsored by Thynk on March 20th, which I will be moderating. Awesome panelists Susan Graves, Founder and CEO of Experience Alive; Dina Belon, President at Staypineapple Hotels; and Melissa Jurkoic, Chief Experience Officer at Thynk are sure to make you think! Now, on to this week's news... |

Important read by Lacey Leone McLaughlin! Meeting Of The UN Body Promoting Equality For Women Starts With 5 Male Speakers The U.N.’s preeminent body promoting equality for women and girls opened its annual meeting with five male speakers in a row – a lineup that made some of the men uneasy and was somewhat baffling to the hundreds of women in the packed General Assembly chamber. Not sure what to say about this other than, WTAF and for the love of God, READ THE ROOM. Why Americans Suddenly Stopped Hanging Out The loneliness epidemic has implications for travel (see FTG Summit highlights) and for us women. This stat from this The Atlantic article stands out "In 2003, the typical female pet owner spent much more time socializing with humans than playing with her cat or dog. By 2022, this flipped, and the average woman with a pet now spends more time “actively engaged” with her pet than she spends hanging out face-to-face with fellow humans on any given day." What’s So Funny About a Naked Man? Loved this thoughtful article in the New York Times about John Cena’s skit at the Academy Awards, which underscored an intractable gender imbalance, while getting legitimate laughs.
