What we call ’I’ is just a swinging door, which moves when we inhale and when we exhale.

~Shunryu Suzuki

Namaste, Yogis!

...and just like that, it's September. This month we will be exploring Ujjayi (victorious) pranayama. It's that audible breath you might hear while you are flowing in class. You can begin to explore the sensations of this breath practice by taking a couple exhales out as if you are going to fog a mirror. Now try that again, but this time keep the mouth closed and continue to fog up that mirror, allowing the breath to exit via the nose. It's almost the same sensation as when you take an exasperated sigh out. The breath is warmed, the sound is grounding, and the core and diaphragm press the exhale out. We use this breath not just to focus and ground the mind. The ujjayi breath creates a sort of internal pressure capsule that helps to support the core in movement and flow. I invite you to explore this breath practice this month.

    • As many of you know, I am starting my Masters of Science in Yoga Therapy and my C-IAYT 1000hr certification this fall. For the next two years, I will be out of town periodically for the program. Classes will be held as usual, with the occasional change, and we will be welcome our lovely Anja back to the studio to help keep the yoga flowing here at YwL. I am excited to bring you more knowledge and tools to help support you in your journey! Thank you for your support and community.

By now, many of you have met or have heard of Anja! She will be subbing at the studio throughout the month as I take time off for grad school! Check out the schedule to see when she will be at YwL!

Anja had her first contact with Yoga 2006 in Germany. She tried different styles and
studios, practiced outside or in front of the TV. When she moved to the US with her
husband she became enthused with the Vinyasa style and decided to deepen her
knowledge by completing a total of 500 hours of teacher training over the last three
years at Tribal Yoga in Hampton. In her playful, non-judgemental Yoga classes, the movements are linked to the breath in order to develop a deep mind-body connection and to stay in the present moment. She guides her students from simple to complex poses with giving lots of modifications. Anja enjoys putting together playlists for her classes, you will hear everything from A like ALT-J to Z like ZZ Top from the 60ies to now depending on the style of the class. Anja also teaches slow flowing Vinyasa classes, restorative Yoga, chair Yoga and kids Yoga classes. Her goal is that students implement the immense benefits of Yoga into their daily lives. When she is not on her mat you find her writing schoolbooks, in the kitchen trying out new recipes or doing all sorts of arts and crafts like sewing, working with leather and beads or upcycling old goods.

This month, you can find Anja teaching the following:

  • 9/6 5:45pm Electro
  • 9/7 9:30am Energy Flow
  • 9/13 5:45pm Electro
  • 9/14 9:30am Energy Flow
