A Downhill Marathon Won't Help You PR/BQ Anecdotally, this is something a lot of coaches know – extreme-downhill marathons aren't as fast or safe as their marketing teams will tell you. But anecdotes weren't enough for me, so I dug into data and race results going back to 2018 for a bunch of extreme-downhill races, along with eight other races considered to be good places to PR/BQ. And... the data BLEW MY MIND. I'm not kidding. I expected to need lots of caveats and risk/benefit analyses in my article, but the results were pretty clear!

The Case for the Smaller Race While they can be amazing experiences, big-city marathons simply aren't organized for you to have a breakthrough race. They're organized to pack 40,000 people on the same course. By contrast, smaller marathons are often specifically designed for you to run well and have a great experience. What can you gain by doing one of these smaller races? An experience of a lifetime and one that is more likely to be close to your fitness level!

Why Training Plans Don't Work (and How to Fix Them) I've been asked hundreds, maybe even thousands of times, why I don't sell training plans on my site, in addition to coaching. Scientific Reasons to Ignore Pace Some of the most dramatic breakthroughs I've witnessed have come at least partly from athletes choosing to ignore pace on both training runs and when racing. Yes, this includes workouts. This even happens when the athlete says they're good about not forcing an easy effort just to make it faster, etc. Why? Well there are a TON of reasons – check out the article!

Easy Running is Vital – Not Just Recovery Easy running is absolutely VITAL to your training, and it goes far beyond simply recovering after interval workouts or long runs. In fact, that's really a side-effect. By calling our easy runs 'recovery runs,' we risk ignoring the true reasons for these runs, and assigning more importance to our workouts and long runs. Learn about the specific adaptations you'll get from easy runs, how much of your running should be easy, and why I think the name we call something is important.

The Power of Showing Up – Defeating an All-or-Nothing Mentality One of the most transformative changes I've experienced with athletes is when they break out of an 'all-or-nothing' mentality. In many cases, it completely changes their training and relationship with running. A black & white mentality is really common in our culture, so this is something that will take work. What are the harms, and how can you defeat this ingrained mentality?

Race StatsSomeone recently asked me how many ultras people on the team had accomplished and... I had NO idea. I've never been one for stats – STORIES are far more important to me, and each number on this chart carries so much meaning regardless of which column it's in. Turns out, M&M athletes have finished 513 races over the past two years, including 68 ultras. If you were ever curious about races/wins/podiums in each type of race... here you go! |
