Newsletter March 6, 2022 Together, we're #keepingitsacred...

A friend of mine recently shared, "When I was a girl, my mom was insistent in making me dress up as Esther EVERY SINGLE YEAR because 'a Jewish Persian girl should celebrate a Jewish Persian heroine!'"

"And there you have it!" I thought. "A perfect example of why representation matters!"

The concept that representation matters is the idea that who is depicted in media and in public places, in legends and in news, matters. It shapes people's ideas about ourselves and our community, and about others not like us, too. So, who is valorized and shamed, who is uplifted and who is denigrated, matters.

Much consciousness has been raised about this issue throughout the feminist movement, and actually started changing more rapidly for the better during the beginnings of the #metoo movement. More storylines featuring protagonists and centering the experiences of women and trans and gender nonbinary people were financed and run (think of show like the Morning Show, Pose, and Insecure).

The story of Purim would absolutely be one of these stories that features the bravery and courage and creativity and commitment of a Persian Jewish female protagonist. How powerful is it that it is the story that is told all around the world tonight! No wonder my friend's mom encouraged her (strongly) to celebrate and emulate Esther. These are the stories we should know and we should tell and we should share-- these are the stories that make a difference. May we celebrate the story of Esther not only tonight but year round!

Please enjoy the following evergreen resources that you can watch or listen to at your convenience (below in this newsletter). One about some of my favorite parts of the Purim story, and one a lively retelling of the Purim story (that I shared with my kids before school this week!). Let us be proud of Esther's leadership, and the leadership of all the Esthers in our community year round!

Together, we're #keepingitsacred…

Rabbi Heather Miller

Founder, Keeping It Sacred

A BIT ABOUT... PURIM

Have you tuned into our "A Bit About... the Holidays" webcast (available on our website and YouTube) and podcast series (available at Spotify and podcast players everywhere)? Rabbi Miller shares some of her favorite features of each of the holy days there. Check out the episode on Purim which begins tonight!

PURIM: RETOLD

Especially for kids, and kids at heart-- Rabbi Miller shares the Purim Story with her kids ages 6 & 7 in a fun and engaging way. Hear in the story the themes of: being proud of who you are, standing up for what you believe in, women’s heroism, and also models an uncle/niece family structure! Use this story to talk with kids about these themes and values. Listen HERE.

BALABUSTA MASK

The colorful “Hot Pink” Rabbi Rose Durbin is back to lead us in an intrepid exploration of stereotypes of Jewish women across the millennia. We can’t wait to explore the textual and visual insights she has to share March 7 at 9am PT/noon ET. REGISTER HERE.

MANY THANKS TO CONGREGATION BETH CHAYIM CHADASHIM

A huge THANK YOU to Congregation Beth Chayim Chadashim for partnering with Keeping It Sacred to bring out SO MUCH Purim Goodness! The shpiel included Sam Smith and Lizzo, the hamantaschen included vegan delicacies, the reading included beautiful chanting by Cantor Juval Porat, and the community service project included tying blankets for teens coming out of the foster care system and homeless teens through the @lalgbtcenter. Fulfilling the four mitzvot of the holiday is fun!

HOMELESS MEMORIAL SERVICE

TONIGHT! Each year, thousands of homeless people die on the streets of our nation due to illness, exposure or violence, many from Pasadena, CA without the dignity and respect they deserve. Help us honor and acknowledge their lives and membership in the human family. Rabbi Miller will participate in this service led by All Saints Church in Pasadena tonight, Monday, March 6 at 6pm. For more information and/or to provide the name of someone you know who has lost their life on the streets (so they can be acknowledged in the service), contact Melissa Hayes at 626.583.2725 or mhayes@allsaints-pas.org.

All are welcome. Participating in the service are our siblings experiencing homelessness, members of Pasadena’s homeless-services community, and local religious leaders. Pianist Russell Ferrante and members of the Trouveres youth choir will offer music.

And join us for a meal and reception following the service in Sweetland Hall!

If you cannot be at the service, you can stream it live here at 6 p.m.: https://allsaints-pas.org/live-stream/.

GRIEF, ANGER, AND UNRESOLVED FEELINGS*

Monday, 3/27 at noon PT/3pm ET join us for a discussion about the grief, anger, and unresolved feelings we may have as we deal with the death of someone who has hurt us. What does tradition say? What has helped us? Where might we find spiritual strength? Register for this program HERE. (*This program was envisioned by the participants of our recent Access Judaism program called "When Bad things Happen to Good People," and is open to everyone.)

HEALING CIRCLE & TALMUD TEXT STUDY EVERY THURSDAY

THIS THURSDAY AND EVERY THURSDAY! Ever want to jump into a conversation with the rabbinic sages of old? Now you can! Join us as we study a page of Talmud every day, adding our perspectives and the relevance to our own lives as we go along.

The more varied the participants the deeper the conversations.
Thursdays 11am PT/2pm ET.

Currently, we are 100 members strong from 36 different states and 11 countries!

We are:

People interested in becoming Jewish

Members of various Jewish denominations

Clergy

Lay leaders

Retired people

People who are not Jewish

We are in our 20s to 80s, and we are everywhere on the spectrum of gender.

Build community affirming of one another’s journey in the sea of Talmud with us! Benefit from the wisdom of Jewish tradition!

What people say:

"Yesterday's class was superb!! I remain impressed by so many things that you do! You are able to keep us on track, share (some of) your knowledge with us, make all sorts of connections to the Jewish and secular worlds, and meet each of us where we are! Kudos to you!!"

"Talmud study has opened a window to that world for me. I love the anthropology and sociology of it all."

"The minority opinions may someday count as much as the majority opinions. It reminds us that things change the Halacha changes and we change each year that we read it."

"We have the opportunity to compare the Halacha we are practicing today with the one they were writing and studying in the Talmud... It has been very interesting how things have evolved how we keep the tradition in our own way."

"I feel very close to this amazing group and I'm grateful to Rabbi Miller for conducting it."

AND just prior to our Talmud Study, we hold space for check-ins and healing prayers for loved ones in need, including ourselves.

Keeping It Sacred programs are free for all because we uphold the value of keruv/accessibility; voluntary financial contributions to help offset the cost of these programs are greatly appreciated.

To join and of these gatherings, please register HERE. Also, DM Rabbi Miller on Facebook HERE to be added to the closed, secret group where we question and discuss. And look for us on Instagram daily HERE.

Also, this past week, our own Rabbi Miller's article on Nazir 41 was published by the Daily Dose of Talmud.
