New Women's Support Group |
Women face different challenges than men, such as higher divorce rates and other psychosocial burdens, increased drug sensitivity that continues to go unstudied, hormonal impacts and efficacy of therapies etc. One major unmet need of women is that there is not a space available for women in our community to learn more about these differences and connect with other women impacted by PD. To address this unmet need, Kristi LaMonica and Stephanie Soto have created a new support group. The group will meet via zoom on the second Wednesday of the month at 7pm starting February 8th. Interested in joining? Email kristi.lamonica@gmail.com and sesoto6@gmail.com |

Wearables Study for Parkinson's |
The purpose of the study is to evaluate if a health technology (involving smartphone and a smart wearable) can help improve patient reported outcomes in patients with Parkinson’s disease. |
A recent study published in the journal of Nature Medicine called “Artificial intelligence-enabled detection and assessment of Parkinson's disease using nocturnal breathing signals” (Yang et al., 2022) showed promising results for potentially recognizing individuals with PD before their actual diagnosis. The authors developed an artificial intelligence (AI) enabled system that could reliably: Predict the presence or development of PD with 90% accuracy Track PD progression and estimate PD severity Provide an objective, non-invasive, at-home assessment of PD while a person is asleep, without touching the body Combine measurements from multiple nights to achieve optimal test accuracy Provide nightly and weekly measurements in a person’s home Eventually be deployed in the homes of individuals at high risk for PD (e.g., those with the LRKK2 gene mutation) to passively monitor their status and provide feedback to their provider
More work needs to be done to test the AI system in larger and more diverse populations, but it sure is promising so far! |
