Together for better air! Spring Newsletter |

Air pollution across the globe is at dangerous levels. It's hard to escape no matter where you live. Despite improvements in Europe over the last decade, levels of air pollutants still exceed EU standards and WHO guidelines. Today, 92% of the world's population is breathing polluted air. It's clear that effective environmental policy is needed, but to succeed everyone has to play their part. At COMPAIR we are exploring how citizen science and new technologies can empower people to determine the impact of their own climate behaviours and contribute to an effective climate-change policy. Below we provide a news round-up, focusing on our main recent results and plans for the months ahead. |

| | Citizen Science Landscape Review COMPAIR recently completed its mapping of 100 Citizen Science (CS) projects in Bulgaria, Germany, Belgium and Greece. A comprehensive review provides information on projects' engagement approach, data collection tools, and impact. In addition, it includes a new framework for categorising CS regimes at national level. | | |
| | COMPAIR Vision Our goals are to mitigate the effects of climate change by (i) increasing the value of citizen science data through globally-relevant urban use cases; (ii) Enhancing public understanding and participation in achieving Green Deal goals and targets; (iii) Foster an open technical and policy environment that drives sustainable change. | | |

| | COMPAIR At GEO Week COMPAIR took part in GEO Week which was themed around 'Accelerating Action'. In the 'EuroGEO Regional Initiatives' panel, COMPAIR introduced participants to the transformative potential of sensors and citizen science for better air quality. | | |
| | Calling Air Quality Volunteers We need people from all backgrounds to help take part in air-quality monitoring experiments using digital sensors. No experience needed. The first experiments will take place in Athens, Berlin, Flanders, Sofia and Plovdiv. | | |

| | Air Pollution a Global Problem Bloomberg news agency reported that in India 132 cities have pollution levels deemed below national standards. This has risen from 102 cities in 2019 when the National Clean Air Programme first began, according to a report by the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air. | | |
| | First Co-Design Workshop COMPAIR's first co-design workshop explored with urban stakeholders in Bulgaria the multidimensional issue of air pollution. Questions addressed included - what are its main causes? How is it affecting the city, its inhabitants and environment? What can citizen science do to help? | | |

| | #LK9 Our first collaborative effort with citizen science project SocioBee has resulted in us being selected for a dilemma workshop on engaging vulnerable people at the Living Knowledge conference in Groningen this June. If you're also attending #LK9 in person, we would love to see you at our joint workshop on the 30th June @ 11:00-12:30 CET. | | |
| | #EURegionsWeek 2022 Building on the initial clustering success, COMPAIR, together with SocioBee and INCENTIVE, successfully submitted another workshop application, this time for the 20th edition of the European Week of Regions and Cities. The online workshop will be held in October (date TBC) and will feature presentations by local policy makers, breakout sessions, and Q&A. | | |
