A Request & Brief Update (July 26th)

Please help to shape a local retrofit service

Dorset Community Energy and Wessex Community Assets are designing a new service, the Dorset Retrofit One Stop Shop, to help householders overcome key barriers to making their homes more energy efficient. By completing this survey we can help them develop a service that works for our needs and has the potential to accelerate adaptation of local homes. It takes about 10 minutes - note their deadline is this Sunday 28th July.

Coming up in August

Sustainable Shaftesbury: the town council's Advisory Committee (SuSAC) has agreed to set up three initial sub-groups to further community activity on energy, transport and nature. The energy sub-group is being led by Jenny Morisetti, transport by John Norris, and nature by Sue Clifford and Angela King. Work on the review of the existing action plan is under way and includes exploring what could be involved in establishing Shaftesbury as the UK's first 'nature and wildlife-friendly' town. They meet monthly, next meeting is on 13 Aug, and contact person (chair) is Richard Thomas (richardgthomas01@gmail.com).

Self-guided local walks? The 'Explore' section of the new Cranborne Chase National Landscape website includes a map with details of medium-length walks (4-6 miles), including several options local to Shaftesbury. Not only for the summer?

Preparing for Autumn Events

Dorset Open Greener Homes: Over two weekends in September, there will be many Dorset homes, allotments and more open to visitors and with hosts willing to share their experience of the changes that have supported greener living. Could you help to encourage more local people to join those who've already arranged to take part? See more about what's involved and the flexibility around ways of participating at the website here.

Sustainable Fashion: a film show and clothes swap is being arranged to take place in Shaftesbury on Sunday 22nd September. This coincides with Sustainable Fashion Week which runs from 20-29th of the month. An increasing number of linked events across the country are being added to the national website.

Food that's healthy for you and healthy for the planet: Several shops and market stalls have chosen to distribute our 'Eat Well' information leaflet. Interested farmers and food producers are being encouraged to join us for one or both of these two events planned for the autumn:

'Six Inches of Soil' film to be followed by a short panel discussion on Thursday 10th October at the town hall;

The Food Conversation: Shaftesbury's own contribution to the nation-wide conversation organised by the Food, Farming & Countryside Commission to find out what people want from food. We could include food security, diet-related ill health, the impact of food production on nature and climate, food bank usage and more. Date now fixed - Monday 4th November.

This food and farming initiative is connecting with members of SuSAC and Immie Jones of the Feeding Dorset Partnership. More details are included on the website listings.

Save the date: Some of our structured events don't provide opportunities for people across our wider network to exchange news and views, for additional people to find out about us, or for those of us 'doing our bit' to unwind with others on our wavelength. There will be an informal gathering, venue still to be decided, on Thursday 19th September.

Is economic growth desirable or not? A blog post just added to the website argues that we could be agnostic about it.
