Sausalito Working Waterfront Coalition meets with delegation from the German Marshall Fund

Recently a representative from the German Marshall Fund contacted SWWC about visiting Sausalito's Marinship District. The representative was hosting a European delegation around the bay area as part of a month-long tour across the US to explore key issues.  The Sausalito Working Waterfront Coalition was happy to give them a tour of the Marinship.  The group met with former Mayor Sandra Bushmaker who explained how a reckless development process, recently approved by a slim City Council majority, if acted on will threaten to destroy Sausalito's innovative industries, artist culture and maritime services.  "It was a pleasure to meet with this distinguished group of business leaders, journalists, and officials," said Bushmaker.

An Excerpt of an Email to Sausalito City Council from Deep Ocean Exploration and Research in Alameda

Last month Liz Taylor, President of DOER submitted an email to City Council.  DOER was displaced from the Alameda Marina several years ago as part of the plan to develop 760 residential units at the site.  DOER was fortunate to find space at the former Alameda Naval Station.  Gentrification plans for the air station are also underway.  Below is an excerpt of that email

I’m writing to voice support for the protection and preservation of Marinship and the surrounding working waterfront/industrial zone in Sausalito….. The bay area has lost much of its working waterfront along with the rich variety of skilled trades men and women. These skilled artisans attract clients and bring money directly into the community. When they can’t find a space to carry out their trade, they move or retire taking decades of experience and local revenue out of the area. In parallel, new start up makers of all kinds need affordable industrial space – the types of spaces often found along working waterfronts. These two sectors work very well together along with the arts. This trifecta of: trades/arts/engineering bring enduring value to the communities who support them. Knowledge is exchanged and innovation sparked.....

The Master Mariners Wooden Boat show at Corinthian Yacht Club

Last month's Wooden Boat Show was a big success.  Locals Hank Easom was aboard the beloved Yucca and Neil Gibbs showed Kay of Gotenborg.  And of course Freda looked amazing! Sausalito's boatyards are some of the last places on the west coast with the expertise and infrastructure to maintain these classics.

What will happen to these classic boats, berthed in Sausalito if we lose the Marinship to development as did Alameda?    Consider La Jota, the 65-foot motor yacht currently hauled out at Richardson Bay Boatworks.  She was built in 1921 in San Pedro.  Marinship has shipwrights with the depth and breath of knowledge to repair and maintain these icons of our cultural heritage as well as the shipways to do the heavy lifting.
