Joe Manchin foils climate action…or did he? |
Unfortunately, plans for climate action have fallen through again, and the blame is being placed whole-heartedly on Joe Manchin. Manchin walked away because of his concern for rising inflation and presumably for his high stake in the coal industry. Plans have been pushed further back, increasing the pressure and demand for action from the environmental community all because of Manchin’s inability to follow through. Click to read more about the details! |
However in a recent update Joe Manchin surprises all by announcing his approval for a new bill, known as the Inflation Reduction Act. This bill has the potential to be one of the largest pieces of climate legislation the US and Manchin’s support is a very important part of it being passed since it requires the approval of all 50 Senate Democrats. This bodes well for future climate activity as well as an improvement to Manchin’s unfortunate environmental reputation. Read more about the bill and Joe Manchin by clicking the link! |

What is the Virginia VS EPA ruling? |
On June 30th, the Supreme court ruled in West Virginia v. EPA that the agency’s emission regulations for power plants were unauthorized. The 6-3 decision severely limits the EPA’s power to impose rules on carbon output, which could have drastic impacts on Biden’s climate agenda. Much of that power will now be handed over to the individual states, many of which will shift to a more lenient stance on emissions. Read more about the consequences of the ruling here. | | |

Volunteer with the REAP Center |
The REAP Center’s mission is to support the transition from unsustainable agriculture practices like monoculture to permaculture practices starting with healthy soil. It is a nonprofit organization developing their ½ mile campus to help build a community, educate people on soil, further support soil research and technology development, and advocate for regenerative agriculture policies. They are looking for environmentally interested people to work on fun and meaningful projects from farming & gardening to building & light construction, while also learning about the importance of soil and regenerative agriculture. We always love visitors and volunteers, and our volunteer days are Sunday 10 am to 7 pm and Wednesdays from 3 pm to 7 pm. See you there! |
