Theme of June: Thrusters....what?!

June welcomes the first movement-specific monthly focus with the thruster! We are not going to beat you down with the thruster thoroughly. Instead, similar to how we prepared for “Murph” in May, we will mix and match elements to build up to improve your thrusters:

  1. Thrusters are programmed at least once per week.

  2. Once per week, we will have another movement that helps build the thruster, for example, wall balls.

  3. June will cover heavy thrusters, dumbbell thrusters, high-rep thrusters, as well a classic thruster benchmark: Open 15.5

Our goal is to make sure you have an opportunity to test, identify weaknesses, and improve all aspects of the thruster throughout this month.

 Community Leader of the Month!

Our JUNE Community Leader of the month is Aime Bregenser!

When Aime walks into Ashlar you can't help but notice how cute her work outfits are ;) and how she always has a huge smile on her face! Her positive vibes are contagious and even spread around the classes when we have burpees programmed lol! She welcomes any new faces in the class and she definitely went above and beyond by choreographing a surprise flash dance over 6 weeks with Ashlar members for a birthday surprise!

She tackles her weaknesses head on and you can also find Aime at our community events supporting whatever fundraiser we are currently running! We are so very lucky to have Aime within our Ashlar community!

More about Aime:

1. What is your favourite thing about CrossFit Ashlar?

Hands down my favourite thing about CrossFit Ashlar is the community that Tarra and Glendon have built. The coaches are all such amazing people and have great tips and tricks to help everyone become better athletes, both physically and mentally. The membership at Ashlar is the best in the city, by far. Everyone is so welcoming and encouraging and will greet you with a smile when you walk into class.

2. What is your favourite post workout meal?

I go to classes in the evenings, so my post workout snack is always a banana or an apple with some nut butter on the side.

3. Which accomplishment are you most proud of?

Honestly, sticking with CrossFit is what I am most proud of. I was a dancer for 30years and after I quit, I was kind of lost when it came to fitness. I tried out a bunch of different things, but nothing really stuck. I tried a CrossFit class on a recommendation by my massage therapist and was lucky enough to meet Laurie Meschishnick. Laurie kept me motivated to keep attending classes and to keep getting stronger. When I started, I could not hang from a bar, had to repeatedly rest during any type of cardio, and had never touched a barbell in my life. Fast forward a few years, and I am in the best shape of my life. A close second would be the surprise flash dance we planned for Tarra’s 40th birthday. Everyone did so well, and she was so surprised.

4. What is your next goal?

Pull ups are next on my list.

5. What is your favourite CrossFit movement?

Anything with a heavy barbell – squats, deadlifts, and power cleans. Heavy days are my favourite days.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for HERO WOD - MURPH

Murph

This is a tough one and that is the point of a HERO WOD. We spend the time to do some hard work and recognize/remember a fallen HERO. Everyone fought through this one and we had some PRs and first attempts! Great job everyone!

Murph is in memory of Navy Lieutenant Michael Murphy, 29, of Patchogue, N.Y., who was killed in Afghanistan June 28th, 2005.

This workout was one of Mike's favorites and he'd named it "Body Armor". From here on it will be referred to as "Murph" in honor of the focused warrior and great American who wanted nothing more in life than to serve this great country and the beautiful people who make it what it is.

Fran Friday!

Stay tuned for a similar event geared toward our young males!
