HCOP’s COVID-19 Response The HCOP team has been closely monitoring the latest coronavirus (COVID-19) updates as well as real-time Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), local, state and federal recommendations. We understand the ability to adapt to our world’s current situation may be difficult for most individuals. The staff of HCOP want you to know that you can count on us to be there for you and your families. To minimize the risk of exposure in our community, all in-person HCOP sessions have been CANCELLED since March 2020. Does this mean that HCOP ends…the answer is NO. Our programming activities continue. |

Innovative, Educated, and Ground-Breaking – A Celebration of African Americans in STEM STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) fields cover a vast amount of accomplishments and successes!! Here are a few African Americans that paved the way and made their mark on history with their amazing work! From left-to-right, top row: • Dr. Stephon Alexander is a theoretical physicist and professor at Brown University who specializes in string theory and particle physics. • George Washington Carver, arguably the most famous Black scientist and inventor. • Dr. Marie M. Daly was a biochemist and the first Black woman to obtain a Ph.D. in chemistry in the United States. • Dr. Sylvester James Gates, Jr. is a theoretical physicist known for his work on supersymmetry, supergravity, and superstring theory. • Dr. Aprielle Ericcson-Jackson is an award-winning aerospace engineer at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center and one of the most famous women working at NASA today. • Zora Neale Hurston – who grew up in Eatonville, Florida – was a renowned author and anthropologist. From left-to-right, bottom row: • Katherine Johnson was one of the famous Hidden Figures who worked at NASA and made the 1969 moon landing possible. • Dr. Percy Julian was a pioneering chemist who made several game-changing discoveries. • Dr. Bruce Ovbiagele is a neurologist and professor at the UCSF Weill Institute for Neurosciences. • Dr. Beverly Daniel Tatum is a celebrated clinical psychologist, notable educator, and a nationally recognized authority on racial issues in America. • Dr. Warren Washington is a distinguished climate scientist and former chair of the National Science Board. Lyrics, Life, and Lessons – Public Health Through A Hip-Hop Lens Let’s begin by defining public health… Public health is the science and art of preventing disease, prolonging life, and improving quality of life through organized efforts and informed choices within societies, organizations (public and private), communities, and at the individual level. (Charles-Edward Amory Winslow) One major component of being a culturally competent and humble health professional is being able to view healthcare and the needs of patient populations from multiple perspectives. And in doing so, the health outcomes of an individual patient, a community, and a population can be significantly affected in a positive way. With that being said, Saturday, February 5, 2022 was the HCOP session where students and staff gained a new perspective on public health. |

Health Professional School - Life “In The Trenches” Most HCOP participants have the ultimate dream of attending a health professional (medical, dental, pharmacy, occupational therapy or physical therapy) school. But what does it truly look like to be a medical student? How much time does a dental student get time to themselves? How does a pharmacy student balance it all? High school and undergraduate students got to hear it all - the “good, bad, and the ugly” - from our very own HCOP health professional student participants during HCOP session 10. During this session on February 5th, 2022, health professional students participated in a panel discussion to answer questions about their experiences. From applying, to keeping up with the workload, to staying motivated, health professional students shared their insight into all aspects of their school experience. |

“Tooth Be Told” by LaDijah Shivers – Creighton University School of Dentistry Demonstration It’s always amazing to hear from students as it relates to their experience and journey in becoming a health professional!! What makes it even better is if that story is coming from a previous HCOPer!!! LaDijah Shivers, current D3 at CU School of Dentistry and former HCOP participant. On Saturday, February 19, 2022, approximately thirty-five (35) HCOP high school and health professional students were joined by LaDijah Shivers (formerly Wood) – 2019-2020 Health Careers Ambassador Program HCOP alumni who shared the story of her journey in “Becoming Dr. DJ” – a future dentist. In addition, LaDijah shared a few demonstrations about dental tools, teeth molds, x-rays, tooth fillings, etc. |

What’s Your Study “Game Plan”? - A Study Skills Workshop School - whether it is high school, college, or health professional school - is the pathway to success for HCOP participants, who know that in order to be a successful healthcare provider, they need the underlying knowledge. At HCOP session 11, participants spent time learning about the importance of having a study “game plan”, and how knowing some key facts about how your brain processes information can help set students up for success. During this workshop, led by academic success counselor Christina Jelinek, students were asked to consider the five W's (who, what, when, where, and WHY) of their study plan. |

Virtual Clinical Experiences with BodyInteract™ In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, HCOP has assumed a virtual format. One challenge that comes with a virtual program is providing students with valuable clinical experiences. Since 2020 HCOP has partnered with BodyInteract™ Virtual Patient Simulator, a web-based program that allows students to assume the role of a healthcare provider. HHCOP high school and undergraduate students were able to take part in virtual clinical experiences on February 5th and 19th, respectively. During these sessions, Dr. John Stone, MD, PhD, was once again on hand to lead students through the case, provide first-hand knowledge, and answer any questions. |

Manjoban “Mojo” Hundal Villanova University – Villanova, Pennsylvania Junior Major: Comprehensive Sciences Undergraduate Health Careers Ambassador Program Participant Question 1: What health professional career are you pursuing and why? Answer: “The professional health career I am pursuing is a sports physician because of my desire of working with and helping athletes perform to the best of their abilities. Also, I have a strong fondness of the atmosphere that surrounds a sporting event since I have been involved with sports for the majority of my life." Question 2: What is your biggest accomplishment? Answer: "My biggest accomplishment was attending and graduating from an independent boarding high school because it was an accolade that only a small percentage of minority students get to experience. The name of the school is St. George's School and it is located in Middletown, Rhode Island.” Question 3: What do you enjoy during your free time? Name one interesting thing about you. Answer: "An interesting fact about myself is that I am bilingual and grew up in a household that practices the Sikh religion. I speak English and Punjabi.” |

Answer: “I have always wanted to be a neurosurgeon, I find the brain so complex, more of a tiny little world of its own, it would be a privilege and an honor to say I am an expert in this." Answer: “My biggest accomplishment is being the first person to get a GCE (General Certificate of Education) at age 12.” Question 3: What do you enjoy during your free time? Name one interesting thing about you. Answer: “I love watching anime, learning new languages, and painting.
