Update #9 DECEMBER 2021

FRIENDS OF BUDDINA

Supporting Community continues into 2022

Can you believe 2021 is nearly over?  What a year!  It really has been an amazing 12 months of hard work with some big wins and more learning opportunities.

Around this time of year we always like to sit down, slow our breathing, and reflect on the past 12 months.  It's not often we get to look back and acknowledge what we have achieved. We hope you too make the time to stop and give yourself a pat on the back for everything you've done this year.  We are really proud of what we have been able to accomplish throughout 2021. However, we could not do this without you and your support. Thank you for joining us on this incredible journey.

Friends of Buddina wish you all the best for for the festive season and the year ahead.

Not everyone uses Social Media and may have missed this:

(i)  A few articles and updates on what's happening

For our supporters who prefer not to reference Facebook, we sometimes share articles on that platform which we think are relevant to our beachside community.

Lights Out, Turtles About!  The messaging is consistent for the next few months - it’s now time to “Flip The Switch”. Turtles Dig the Dark - please help our endangered loggerhead turtles by switching off your exterior lights and drawing the blinds from 8pm each night until the end of the season in May.

Urban heat islands could be making suburbs hotter - last month we shared the story “As backyards get smaller and trees are removed, urban heat islands could be making suburbs hotter”.  18 months earlier, the same theme applied “Warning over 'heat island' effect in cities as tree coverage declines”.  The key to reversing the loss: Trees in suburban streets have been shown to reduce temperatures by as much as 10 degrees, but it's not as simple as just planting more.  "Increasing the diversity of tree species in our cities is crucial in ensuring that our urban landscapes remain resilient to the many challenges of climate change, particularly drought, pest and disease."  Have you considered calling Council and requesting some street trees be planted on the verge outside your house?

Trialling new methods of sand nourishment - investigations are underway by Council to trial a method of sand nourishment at Maroochydore Beach, to protect the area from the effects of severe weather.  The technique, called nearshore nourishment, has not been used on the Sunshine Coast before and involves importing sand from outside the region and placing it in the water, about 300m off the beach.  A dredge will collect sand from the Spitfire Channel, in Moreton Bay, and transport it to Maroochydore Beach for release, potentially using two methods.  One method may include dropping the sand from the bottom of the barge and the other will spray the sand in a rainbow shape into the water.  The results of both methods will be compared.  Surf amenity will be a consideration.

Interesting read - A fire protection system in a Sunshine Coast unit block was installed back to front and in a blaze would have sprayed water on to the road, not the burning building.  This shocking bungle was one of dozens of defects exposed by Samantha Reece, director of the Australian Apartment Advocacy group… “There is a building defect crisis in Queensland.’’… Reece has called for an inquiry.

Queensland’s leading independent fire and building expert Stephen Burton, agrees…The list goes on and on: Internal water leaks in apartments in rainy weather – source not found; carpets wrecked; water gushing into apartments in rain due to poorly fitted windows or drainage problems above.

Burton blames greedy developers cutting corners to cash in on the boom in the apartment market.

CoastSnap here at Buddina - did you know that we have our own CoastSnap here at Buddina? CoastSnap is a global citizen science project to capture our changing coastlines. No matter where you are in the world, if you have a smartphone and an interest in the coast, you can participate.  Next time you take a walk around Pt Cartwright, check out the CoastSnapBuddina site in the shelter adjacent to the northern carpark – the signage explains the process.  This UNSW citizen Science project provides for community beach monitoring to help record our changing coastline.

Check out the website and download the app.https://www.coastsnap.com/

It’s an all too familiar story – the same happens here on the Sunshine Coast too.  Name an endangered species and you’ll find development priority prevails over the environmental concerns and “... we'll just take away one little bit and then this little bit over here."

Passenger rail is a 'smarter' long-term transport solution -  travelling along the designated transport corridor (CAMCOS) connecting Maroochydore CBD to Brisbane, via Beerwah is such a "no-brainer" ...

(iii)  Surveys - have your say, don't leave it to others who may have different opinions

Pt Cartwright and La Balsa Park Management Plan

Have you had your say yet? Time is running out. It’s important that we protect and retain our green-space for today and into the future. This site has important Indigenous heritage, European history, and a mix of valuable environmental attributes - this very special part of Buddina and it is crucial that Council retain this as green-space.  Please participate and 𝙃𝙖𝙫𝙚 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙨𝙖𝙮 on the future of 𝙋𝙤𝙞𝙣𝙩 𝘾𝙖𝙧𝙩𝙬𝙧𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩 𝙍𝙚𝙨𝙚𝙧𝙫𝙚 and 𝙇𝙖 𝘽𝙖𝙡𝙨𝙖 𝙋𝙖𝙧𝙠. Allow 5-10 minutes to complete the survey.

Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for Queensland?

Qld is the only state in Australia without an external independent Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).  This community survey is part of broader consultation and engagement about the possible establishment of an independent EPA in Queensland.  This survey / consultation closes Sunday 6 February 2022.  This community survey has nine questions taking about 5 minutes to complete, however you do need an account to participate (2 minutes to set-up if you don't have one)

You can read more information about the consultation and the proposed EPA for Qld

Expanding the ban of single-use plastic items

Queensland’s ban on single-use plastic straws, stirrers, plates, bowls with lids and cutlery, and expanded polystyrene takeaway food containers and cups commenced a few months ago. Great news, DES now want your feedback on expanding the ban to include other single-use plastic items such as takeaway coffee cups and lids, drinking cups, magazine wrapping, fruit and vegetable bags and fruit and expanded polystyrene fruit and meat trays. This survey will close Friday 28 January 2022. Please participate and take the survey, note that you do need an account to participate and you can use the same account as the EPA survey above (2 minutes to set-up if you don't have one).

You can read more about the consultation and information on tackling plastic waste.

You may be aware that the new airport flight path has a greater impact on Buddina than the previous flight path.  Engage Airservices will be extending the submission period for community suggested alternatives to Sunday 9th January 2022, to allow the community more opportunity to complete the online survey, which can be found HERE

Again, you do need an account to participate (2 minutes to set-up if you don't have one).
