Tyreek Rolon Doesn't Want To Be The Exception |
Tyreek Rolon was a star athlete and an honors student, winning scholarships and starting college. When his situation altered, those facts from his past made it easier for the criminal justice system to see him as "redeemable" (their word), the person in whom they'd invest resources and give benefit of the doubt. Now Tyreek recognizes the advantages he gained because of others' perceptions. But imagine the results if every person received the same kind of help, resources, and trust. Read his story on our blog. |

FORTE House Participated in Community Dialogue with New DOC Ombudsperson |
On Nov. 4, FORTE House was one of the many community organizations represented on a Zoom meeting with the new DOC Ombudsperson Terry Schuster, who was appointed to the position last May. The first Annual Report report from the office under Mr. Schuster was published on November 1, and lays out priorities the immediate future. During the Zoom meeting, Mr. Schuster did far more listening than talking as various individuals provided feedback on the work ahead. We are optimistic about the potential impact of the Ombudsperson's work, even as we recognize that change take time. Read the Annual Report to learn more. |

Residents Teach Medical Students about Health Care in Prisons |
Each year, FORTE House residents invite 4th-year medical students from Rush University Medical College in Chicago to hear about the health challenges of the incarcerated population, and the delivery of health services in NJ State prisons. For some students, the conversation brings to light the impact of incarceration on health and well-being, long term. Some students see new opportunities to serve our special community. All the med students walk away a profound appreciation of the human cost of our current system. It's another way FORTE House serves others: both the students, and the community of impacted people. |
