ACES AND PLACES

NEWSLETTER FEBRUARY 2021

There was plenty of activity prior to Christmas with various parties and gatherings... we trust all members and friends had a safe and enjoyable holiday season and thanks to those members who contributed in organising events.

And for 2021.....

Tony Tarzia has taken up monthly lawn bowls with Mike McLean, Peter and Alis Woods and Peter and Sandi Cooke were down at Albany at Christmas, James Williams and Debbie Napier are missing their first Australian Open as linespeople in many years. Doug and Coralie Webster are making more investments in racehorses.  Both Nadia Rajan and Austin Vos have returned to the US for College.  Caitlyn Napier experienced a white Christmas with her uncle and his family in New York State.  Trish Haffenden is soon to be a first time grandmother.  Tyler Mizuhata is going great guns coaching for Team Tennis.  Best wishes to Lois Ker and Doug Napier recovering from surgeries.  Unfortunately well liked former social player Brian Butler has died recently - our condolences to Brian's family.  Congratulations to Ian and Cathy Hutchison on becoming grandparents.  There are too many great results to highlight but Hensman juniors have dominated the Tenniswest junior tournaments throughout the summer.

Carpark Upgrade

We have been successful in our proposal to the South Perth Council to upgrade our carpark.  This will cost the club $15,000 with the rest of work being paid by the Council.  Our thanks to Ken McIntosh for putting this together.  I think we would all agree the current situation is an eyesore and difficult to maintain and the new carpark will make a significant difference.  This work is starting in February.

Congratulations to Matt Horrocks who won the over 40 singles at a recent tournament at Mt Lawley. Matt's son entered him into the competition as a "joke" Christmas present but I guess Dad had the last laugh.  Mind you, Matt's children are fast improving so how long he can can maintain family bragging rights is questionable!!

Matt's last tournament victory was as a 16 year old so its been a while between victories.

Social Tennis

A great group of ladies have been playing social tennis on a Thursday night... many will now be back playing pennants with the competition resuming.  If interested in having a hit, please contact the club.

Thanks to James Williams for organising a "Sandgropers v the Rest" Challenge for the Wednesday afternoon mens social group plus a sausage sizzle.  The Sandgropers came out on top!!

Coming Up

Sausage Sizzle - Saturday 20th February

Sponsors Function Afternoon  - Friday 5th March

Junior End Of Season Wind Up - 26th March

Club Dinner - 30th April

Hensman Legend Clive Wilderspin awarded Order of Australia

The Medal of the Order (OAM) award follows Wilderspin’s inaugural induction into the Tennis West Hall of Champions (2019) and 1988 induction into the Western Australian Hall of Champions.  Ranked as WA’s No. 1 Men’s Singles player for an impressive thirteen years running (1946 – 1959), Wilderspin figures prominently on the Hensman honour boards.

Internationally in 1953, he was a runner up in the French Championships with Mervyn Rose in Men’s Doubles, the Dutch National Championships Men’s Doubles winner with Lew Hoad and travelled with the Australian touring team to compete in all four Grand Slam tournaments.

Praised for his longstanding sportsmanship, determination and athleticism, Wilderspin continued to play throughout his senior years, continuing to win competitions and receive notable awards both on and off the court.  Serving as the Tennis West Vice President for a number of years, Wilderspin is recognised as a Life Member of Hensman Park, Tennis West and Tennis Seniors WA.

James Connolly who has chosen to join the ranks of being an Australian citizen.  James is a fantastic player in his own right, does a great job coaching many of our best juniors and has been heavily involved in developing the UTR series of tournaments played at the club.  James is pictured here with his certificate after the Australia Day citizenship ceremony...... Aussie, Aussie, Aussie.....

The club has been running numerous UTR ("Universal Tennis Rating") tournaments.  The latest was a "green ball" competition which we mixed with a 1.5 hour training session with James Connolly and Tyler Mizuhata.  This is a great opportunity for kids to learn to compete under the mottos of grit, passion and friendship.  The tournaments are run in conjunction with the Kent Yamazaki and Bob Brett Foundation and we are very grateful for the support of Tomio Yamazaki and also the efforts of Ellen Lynch to make it all happen.

HPH Solutions

HPH Solutions is our newest sponsor.  This is a financial planning business located at 123 Melville Parade in Como & comprises 3 directors & 14 staff. Rob Pyne is the Managing Director & 2012 Financial Planner of the Year in Western Australia.

HPH Solutions is a privately owned business which was formed in 2002 & is accredited as a Professional Practice by the Financial Planning Association nationally, highlighting the professionalism of the business. Most of their clients are successful business owners and families in the over 40 age bracket who work with HPH to maximize their wealth & plan ahead for retirement.

In 2020 HPH Solutions was adjudged by its peers to be the best financial planning business in Australia while one of its staff, Zac Leeson, won the best financial planner award at the Financial Planning Association annual awards - an incredibly rare double accolade! Needless to say, business has grown appreciably since then.

HPH is proud to sponsor our  Club because it is a sports - oriented business which enjoys connecting with the local community. With a business focus on “staying well”, sponsoring our Club was a natural fit.  One of Rob’s sons plays tennis at Hensman as a student of Wesley College.

Like most other businesses, COVID had an impact on HPH, with staff required to work from home for 6-8 weeks. Fortunately, this was short-lived, had little impact on their clients & has now resulted in more flexible working arrangements.

Members who would like to have a no obligation, free chat with HPH Solutions about their personal financial plans are encouraged to call Rob Pyne on 9200 3123 to make an appointment.  You might be surprised how they can help you achieve your goals.
