Dear Caregiver,

I hope this issue opens your heart to learning and growing.  Each resource listed in this Newsletter helped strengthen my own empathy, kindness, and patience as a caregiver and as a human being.

Featured Film

Still Mine is based on true events about a farmer, Craig Morrison (James Cromwell Academy Award nominee) and his wife, Irene, who is stricken with dementia.  Craig comes up against the bureaucratic system who hamper his efforts to build a new, smaller cottage for he and his wife because of her decline. It is laced with wry humor and is a beautiful story.

"What Is True For Me" Latest Blog

The following is a dialogue that I had with Mom recently. It was totally unexpected as most things are with this disease; however, I feel it warrants writing about because I’m sure many of you have had the same conversation or will have, and it might help you to clarify, once again, that NOTHING with this disease is ever expected, or can be counted on, or be anywhere close to being “normal.”

Tara Westover, Author

EDUCATED

Born to survivalists, Tara Westover grew up with 7 siblings in the mountains of Idaho. The family was so isolated from mainstream society that there was no one to ensure the children receive an education, medical care, and no one one to intervene when one of Tara's older brothers became violent. Tara began to educate herself enough to pass the ACT and found herself in a classroom for the first time at age 17.

Tara's quest for knowledge transformed her, taking her on to higher education. Only then did she wonder if she had traveled too far, if there was still a way home.

Educated is an account of self-preservation and self-invention.

VIEW OPRAH INTERVIEW

It is a tale of family loyalty and the grief that comes with estrangement. Tara offers a story that gets to the heart of what an education is and what it offers: the perspective to see one's life through new eyes and the will to change it.

Here are two brief video clips of Tara interviewed by Oprah and Ellen.

Oprah's clip has to do with difficult family members that some of us have to deal with in our world of caregiving.  Ellen's is a good overall interview about Tara and her book.

A Personal Note

Every source of information I come across and absorb helps with my care of Mom and life outside of caregiving, i.e., remembering the compassion of Fred Rogers, the courage of Tara Westover, and Craig's perseverance in Still Mine.

Everything helps me heal, learn,

and grow.

As important, I found my smile and sense of humor at Disneyland, who knew that's where I'd find them?!

Every one of us goes through a variety of suffering within our own unique circumstances, especially as a caregiver, but also those separate from this arena.  It shows me how all struggle is the same, and that we all are, indeed, connected.

My goal every day is to strengthen our resilience and impact our lives positively by sharing what I find.

My sincere encouragement,

love and support, Vic
